History

Each individual costs approximately $180 per day to house.{{Cite web|url=https://news.azpm.org/p/news-articles/2017/12/21/121748-report-raises-red-flags-over-treatment-of-immigrant-detainees/|title=Report Raises Red Flags Over Treatment of Immigrant Detainees|last=Montoya|first=Nancy|website=news.azpm.org|language=en|access-date=2018-12-14}} Eloy is adjacent to three other prisons also run by CoreCivic: the Red Rock Correctional Center, the La Palma Correctional Facility, and the Saguaro Correctional Center.
After the Trump administration's controversial zero-tolerance family separation policy in 2018, the facility housed roughly 300 mothers separated from their children.{{Cite web|url=https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/immigration/2018/07/12/separated-children-inside-eloy-detention-mothers-wait-ice-reunited/777922002/|title=Reunited or deported? As a result of passing all inspections despite the facility's high suicide rate, the National Immigrant Justice Center found ICE and the Obama administration of being complicit in hiding maltreatment at the center in a 2015 report. Also in 2015, U.S. Representative Raúl Grijalva toured the facility, calling it "the deadliest immigration detention center in the U.S." In late July 2015, he called for an independent investigation into the most recent suicide.{{Cite web|url=https://tucson.com/news/local/border/report-ice-complicit-in-hiding-maltreatment-at-eloy-center/article_911d543f-2983-5108-a1a4-1a2d19353240.html|title=Report: ICE complicit in hiding maltreatment at Eloy center|last=Star|first=Perla Trevizo Arizona Daily|website=Arizona Daily Star|language=en|access-date=2018-12-14}}
