It is located at the mouth of the river Pasvikelva where it flows into the Bøkfjorden, a southern branch of the Varangerfjorden. The village lies about {{convert|6|km}} east of the village of Hesseng, along the European route E105. History

Road bypass
As part of an {{NOK|875 million|link=yes}} programme of improvements to European route E105, work started in 2014 on a bypass route to the north of the village comprising a {{convert|284|m|adj=on}} long new Bøkfjord Bridge and a new {{convert|690|m|adj=on}} tunnel through the adjacent Trifonhøgda mountain.{{Cite web |date=22 September 2014 |title=Starter vegbygging mellom Trifonhøgda og Elvenes |url=http://www.vegvesen.no/Europaveg/e105/Nyhetsarkiv/starter-vegbygging-mellom-trifonhøgda-og-elvenes |access-date=5 January 2017 |website=vegvesen.no |publisher=Statens Vegvesen |language=Norwegian}} The bridge has a {{convert|500|tonne|lk=on}} steel central arch span of {{convert|120|m}}, which was constructed in Wilhelmshaven, Germany and will be transported by barge along the entire west and north coast of Norway into the fjord.
