The Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) is a citation index produced since 2015 by Thomson Reuters and now{{when|date=May 2025}} by Clarivate. The ESCI is accessible through the Web of Science, together with other Clarivate indexes.{{cite web |last=Web of Science platform |title=Available databases A to Z |publisher=Clarivate |year=2015 |url=http://mjl.clarivate.com/}}[https://books.google.com/books?id=4FQ7DwAAQBAJ&dq=%22Emerging+Sources+Citation+Index%22&pg=PT47 Francisco J. Cantu-Ortiz: Research Analytics] As of June 2021, all journals indexed in ESCI are also included in the Journal Citation Reports. While these journals still did not receive an impact factor until the next year, they did contribute citations to the calculation of other journals' impact factors.{{cite web |title=Web of Science Journal Evaluation Process and Selection Criteria |website=Web of Science Group |date=2020-06-25 |url=https://clarivate.com/webofsciencegroup/journal-evaluation-process-and-selection-criteria/ |access-date=2020-10-21}}{{cite journal |last1=Somoza-Fernández |first1=Marta |last2=Rodríguez-Gairín |first2=Josep-Manuel |last3=Urbano |first3=Cristóbal |title=Journal coverage of the Emerging Sources Citation Index |journal=Learned Publishing |volume=31 | issue=3 | date=2018-02-12 |doi=10.1002/leap.1160 |pages=199–204 |s2cid=51610941 |doi-access=free }} In July 2022, Clarivate announced that journals in the ESCI obtain an impact factor effective from JCR Year 2022 first released in June 2023.{{Cite web |date=2022-07-26 |title=Clarivate announces changes to the 2023 Journal Citation Reports |url=https://clarivate.com/news/clarivate-announces-changes-to-the-2023-journal-citation-reports/ |access-date=2023-08-23 |website=Clarivate}}

Criticism

Jeffrey Beall argued that among the databases produced by Clarivate, the ESCI is the easiest one to get into and that as a result it contains many predatory journals.{{cite web |last1=Beall |first1=Jeffrey |author-link1=Jeffrey Beall |title=The TR Master Journal List is not a Journal Whitelist |url=https://scholarlyoa.com/2016/04/28/the-tr-master-journal-list-is-not-a-journal-whitelist/ |website=Scholarly Open Access |publisher=WordPress.com |access-date=28 April 2016 |date=28 April 2016 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170109064437/https://scholarlyoa.com/2016/04/28/the-tr-master-journal-list-is-not-a-journal-whitelist/ |archive-date=2017-01-09}}{{cite web |last1=Beall |first1=Jeffrey |title=Bogus Iran-Based Journal Allows Up to 40% Plagiarism |url=https://scholarlyoa.com/2016/01/28/bogus-iran-based-journal-allows-up-to-40-plagiarism/ |website=Scholarly Open Access |publisher=WordPress.com |access-date=19 July 2018 |date=28 January 2016 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161113193046/https://scholarlyoa.com/2016/01/28/bogus-iran-based-journal-allows-up-to-40-plagiarism/ |archive-date=2016-11-13}}
