Early life and education

Alt's mother, Françoise, was a Lanvin and Nina Ricci model in the 1960s and '70s. Alt herself studied at the Institut de l'Assomption[https://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/28/style/28iht-rlub.4.10534576.html A stylish academy in Paris] - The New York Times, 28 February 2008 in Paris.

Career

Alt became fashion director[http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=NWEC&p_theme=nwec&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_topdoc=1&p_text_direct-0=0EC05F8B6BFACF59&p_field_direct-0=document_id& The Buck Stops Here] - Newsweek, 22 December 2000 (fee required) of Vogue in 2000, when Roitfeld assumed the chief editor's position and hired Alt directly from Mixte magazine.[http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-27987563_ITM KARL & CO. (Karl Lagerfeld)] - Harper's Bazaar, 1 June 2000 (fee required)

Prior to Mixte, she held positions at French ELLE (starting in 1984, she was only 17 years old) and then at 20 Ans where she became the editor-in-chief in 1993.

During Roitfeld's tenure the publication's 2010 circulation rose from 100,000 to 140,000, during the global financial crisis. The increase was probably encouraged by the magazine's content – much of it styled by Alt as well as Roitfeld – in a provocative manner that included a great deal of nudity and sadomasochistic appurtenances.[https://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/08/business/media/08vogue.html Fashion Director Is Named New Editor of French Vogue] - Cathy Horyn, The New York Times, 7 January 2011

Alt's annual salary at French Vogue is about US$300,000 compared to the yearly US$2-million (in 2005) of her counterpart, American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.[http://nymag.com/guides/salary/14497/index3.html Who Makes How Much – New York's Salary Guide] - New York, 26 September 2005 However, the circulation of the American edition at 1 million-plus dwarfs that of the French edition of the publication.

Alt's first issue at the helm was April 2011. About her intentions for the future content of French Vogue, she stated: "I don't think there should be radical changes".[http://www.vogue.com/vogue-daily/article/emmanuelle-alt-editor-of-vogue-paris-on-daria-werbowy-celebrity-covers-and-new-designers/ Emmanuelle Alt, The New Editor of Vogue Paris, on Daria Werbowy, Celebrity Covers, and New Designers] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110825093236/http://www.vogue.com/vogue-daily/article/emmanuelle-alt-editor-of-vogue-paris-on-daria-werbowy-celebrity-covers-and-new-designers/ |date=25 August 2011 }} - Mark Holgate, Vogue.com, 7 February 2011 And she intends to remain with the magazine's past stable of photographers, such as David Sims, Mert and Marcus, Mario Testino, and Bruce Weber. In July 2013 she declared to Huffington Post that "London and Paris are worlds apart".{{cite web|url=http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/vogue.fr/vogue-paris-august-2013-london-issue_b_3598074.html|title=Vogue Paris August 2013: The London Issue|date=23 July 2013|publisher=HuffPost}}

Style

Alt wears jeans while eschewing dresses and skirts. She is often found dressed in her signature blazers or jackets, paired with skinny jeans and towering heels. In a December 2020 interview, she said that her favorite model right now is Malika Louback.{{Cite web|title=EXCLUSIVE: VOGUE PARIS EIC EMMANUELLE ALT ON HER FAVORITE MODELS RIGHT NOW|url=https://fashionweekdaily.com/emmanuelle-alt-vogue-paris/}}

Personal life

Alt has two children, Antonin and Françoise, who were 13 and 6 years old when Alt assumed her new position. Her husband, also in the fashion business, is Franck Durand, the artistic director of Isabel Marant.

Alt does not smoke or drink alcohol. She states that she doesn't "look after [herself]," refraining from exercise and visiting a hairdresser.{{cite news|last=Alexander|first=Hilary|title=Emmanuelle Alt Interview|work=The Telegraph|date=7 March 2022|url=http://fashion.telegraph.co.uk/columns/hilary-alexander/TMG8364869/Emmanuelle-Alt-interview.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170728154748/http://fashion.telegraph.co.uk/columns/hilary-alexander/TMG8364869/Emmanuelle-Alt-interview.html|archive-date=28 July 2017}}
