Prior its acquisition in 2015, Energy Points was a privately held source energy intelligence company. Its SaaS platform, no longer in use by Lux Research, measured energy use from its source through the site of consumption. By measuring what is known as "source energy," the company is able to convert all energy sources, including water, electricity, fuels, and materials, into a single common unit.[https://money.cnn.com/2014/02/06/technology/energy-points.pr.fortune/ “Measuring energy,”] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140408214713/http://money.cnn.com/2014/02/06/technology/energy-points.pr.fortune/ |date=2014-04-08 }} By: Kirk Kardashian, Fortune Magazine, Feb. 6, 2014

Product
The company's product, Energy Points Analytics, takes enterprise's on-site energy consumption data and maps it to its database of geospatial source energy data. Mathematical models process this data and generate source-to-site energy analytics, which can be viewed in the Energy Points portal or integrated with 3rd-party dashboards and services.{{cite web|url=http://www.energypoints.com/how-it-works/ |title=How It Works |publisher=Energy Points |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140408213421/http://www.energypoints.com/how-it-works/ |archive-date=2014-04-08 }}
Science and technology
The Energy Points platform uses proprietary algorithms, coupled with geospatial and temporal databases to convert all domains (water, electricity, transportation, etc.) into the amount of primary energy (crude oil) embodied in one gallon of gasoline[https://ssrn.com/abstract=1851524 “The Sustainability Babel Fish,”] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230813195722/https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1851524 |date=2023-08-13 }} By Nalin Kulatilaka and Ory Zik: Social Science Research Network, May 24, 2011 in order to help companies calculate and communicate their resource consumption in a comprehensive way.[https://archive.today/20120908063426/http://www.realenergywriters.com/ee-blog/2012/03/15/all-sustainability-is-local/ “All Sustainability is Local,”] By Elisa Wood, Real Energy Writers: Energy Efficiency Markets Blog, March 15, 2012[http://www.triplepundit.com/2012/05/tale-desks-integrated-reporting-road-environmentally-financially-sustainable-success/ “A Tale of Two Desks: Integrated Reporting and the Road to Environmentally, Financially Sustainable Success,”] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121019093040/http://www.triplepundit.com/2012/05/tale-desks-integrated-reporting-road-environmentally-financially-sustainable-success/ |date=2012-10-19 }} By Ory Zik: Triple Pundit, May 30, 2012[https://www.forbes.com/sites/ericagies/2012/05/29/apples-to-apples-a-way-to-compare-sustainability-projects-cost-and-environment-benefits/ “Apples to Apples: Comparing Sustainability Projects' Cost And Environment Benefits,”] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303232343/http://www.forbes.com/sites/ericagies/2012/05/29/apples-to-apples-a-way-to-compare-sustainability-projects-cost-and-environment-benefits/ |date=2016-03-03 }} By Erica Gies, Forbes: Green Tech, May 29, 2012
Energy Points’ methodology is based on three principles:
- Resources such as electricity, water, fuels, and materials can be measured as energy;
- The energy we use must be measured from its source; and
- Source-to-site energy analysis should incorporate environmental externalities.{{Citation needed|date=May 2020}}
