Enterobacteria phage P4 (also known as satellite phage P4) is a temperate bacteriophage strain of species Escherichia virus P2 within genus Peduovirus (formerly P2-like viruses, P2virus, and P2likevirus), subfamily Peduovirinae, family Myoviridae.{{cite journal|last=Pruss|first=G |author2=Goldstein, RN |author3=Calendar, R|title=In vitro packaging of satellite phage P4 DNA|journal=Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America|date=June 1974|volume=71|issue=6|pages=2367–71|pmid=4526304|doi=10.1073/pnas.71.6.2367|pmc=388456|bibcode=1974PNAS...71.2367P |doi-access=free }} It is a satellite virus, requiring P2-related helper phage to grow lytically.
Structure
The P4 virion has a tail and an icosahedral head containing a linear double-stranded DNA genome of 11,627 kb.{{cite journal|last=Briani|first=Federica |author2=Dehò, Gianni |author3=Forti, Francesca |author4=Ghisotti, Daniela|title=The Plasmid Status of Satellite Bacteriophage P4|journal=Plasmid|year=2002|volume=45|issue=1|pages=1–17|doi=10.1006/plas.2000.1497|pmid=11319927}}{{cite journal |title=Mimivirus and its Virophage |vauthors=Claverie JM, Abergel C |journal=Annual Review of Genetics |year=2009 |volume=43 |pages=49–66 |doi=10.1146/annurev-genet-102108-134255 |pmid=19653859}}
Life cycle
Phage P4 infects Escherichia coli. It is a satellite virus which cannot engage in lytic growth without the presence of a P2-related helper phage. It generally follows a lysogenic life cycle: after infection, the P4 genome integrates into that of its host. The P4 genome can also exist on its own within the host cell and can replicate as a free plasmid.{{cite journal|last=Christie|first=GE|author2=Calendar, R|title=Interactions between satellite bacteriophage P4 and its helpers.|journal=Annual Review of Genetics|year=1990|volume=24|pages=465–90|pmid=2088176|doi=10.1146/annurev.ge.24.120190.002341}}
