Baig was appointed chairman of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) by President Mamnoon Hussain in November 2013 on the Prime Minister's advice.{{cite web| url=https://www.dawn.com/news/1054891| title=Baig appointed BISP chairman| newspaper=Dawn| date=8 November 2013| author=A reporter| accessdate=16 August 2017| archive-date=16 August 2017| archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170816151724/https://www.dawn.com/news/1054891| url-status=live}} He resigned from this post a year later, in November 2014, and was appointed chairman of Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), a lesser position than BISP Chairman.{{cite web | url=https://www.dawn.com/news/1146964 | title=Enver Baig quits as BISP chairman; made head of PIDC | newspaper=Dawn | first=Khawar | last=Ghumman | date=26 November 2014 | accessdate=16 August 2017 | archive-date=16 August 2017 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170816150133/https://www.dawn.com/news/1146964 | url-status=live }}
Achievements
Baig served as honorary consul general of the Republic of Uruguay in Pakistan, and president of the Pakistan Overseas Employment Promoters Association from 1982 to 1983. He chaired the Standing Committee on Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis for the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) from 1994 to 1995, and chaired the FPCCI's Standing Committee on Diplomatic Affairs from 1995 to 1998. Baig was also a member of the PPP's Policy Planning Wing.{{cite web | url=http://www.pakistanherald.com/profile/senator-r-enver-baig-322 | title=Senator (R) Enver Baig | publisher=Pakistan Herald Publications (PHPL) | accessdate=16 August 2017 | archive-date=16 August 2017 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170816152329/http://www.pakistanherald.com/profile/senator-r-enver-baig-322 | url-status=live }}
Controversy
Baig asked the Public Accounts Committee of Pakistan (PAC) for audits of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in 2007; he termed the then PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf "the most incompetent official in the PCB".{{Cite web |url=http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan/content/story/297276.html |title=Senator requests PCB audit |author=Cricinfo Staff |publisher=ESPNcricinfo |date=8 June 2007 |accessdate=16 August 2017 |archive-date=16 August 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170816200210/http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan/content/story/297276.html |url-status=live }}
Ashraf, in reply, called Baig "a sick man." However, these statements were withdrawn in a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Sports held under the chairmanship of Tahir Hussain Mashhadi.{{Cite web |url=http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan/content/story/299211.html |title=PCB chairman, senator withdraw charges |publisher=ESPNcricinfo |date=22 June 2007 |accessdate=16 August 2017 |archive-date=17 August 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170817000659/http://www.espncricinfo.com/pakistan/content/story/299211.html |url-status=live }}
In February 2009, Baig accused the Pakistan national cricket team's players of being involved in match fixing, stating that "the main problem in the Pakistan team is gambling and match-fixing".{{Cite web |url=http://www.rediff.com/cricket/report/pcb-employee-sacked-on-suspicion-of-match-fixing/20100216.htm |title='Pak players involved in match-fixing' |work=Rediff.com |date=16 February 2010 |accessdate=16 August 2017 |archive-date=16 August 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170816191259/http://www.rediff.com/cricket/report/pcb-employee-sacked-on-suspicion-of-match-fixing/20100216.htm |url-status=live }}
Death
On 21 April 2023, Baig died at his house in Islamabad at age 74.
