The giant horse (Equus giganteus) is an extinct species of horse which lived in North America.
It was classified as a species based on the finding of a single tooth from Texas larger than the teeth of even the largest modern draft horses.{{cite journal|url=https://digitallibrary.amnh.org/handle/2246/1544|title=Tooth characters and revision of the North American species of the genus Equus|publisher=Bulletin of the AMNH|first1=James Williams|last1=Gidley|date=1901 |hdl=2246/1544 }}{{cite web|url=https://www.utep.edu/leb/pleistnm/taxaMamm/Equusgiganteus.htm|title=†Equus giganteus Gidley 1901—Giant Horse}} Based on the tooth, the weight was estimated at {{cvt|1,200 - 1,500|kg||abbr=on}} and the height at {{cvt|2.25|m||abbr=on}} tall at the shoulder.{{cite book |last1=Eisenmann |first1=Vera |chapter=Gigantic horses |pages=31–40 |s2cid=171086133 |chapter-url=https://vera-eisenmann.com//IMG/pdf/136.Gigantic_horses.pdf |editor1-last=Petculescu |editor1-first=Alexandru |editor2-last=Ştiucă |editor2-first=Emanoil |title=Advances in vertebrate paleontology 'Hen to Panta' |date=2003 |publisher='Emil Racoviţă' Institute of Speology |isbn=978-973-0-02910-9 |oclc=895100716 }} Because it is based on fragmentary remains, recent authors have considered the species to be an invalid nomen dubium.{{Cite journal |last1=Cirilli |first1=Omar |last2=Machado |first2=Helena |last3=Arroyo-Cabrales |first3=Joaquin |last4=Barrón-Ortiz |first4=Christina I. |last5=Davis |first5=Edward |last6=Jass |first6=Christopher N. |last7=Jukar |first7=Advait M. |last8=Landry |first8=Zoe |last9=Marín-Leyva |first9=Alejandro H. |last10=Pandolfi |first10=Luca |last11=Pushkina |first11=Diana |last12=Rook |first12=Lorenzo |last13=Saarinen |first13=Juha |last14=Scott |first14=Eric |last15=Semprebon |first15=Gina |date=2022-08-24 |title=Evolution of the Family Equidae, Subfamily Equinae, in North, Central and South America, Eurasia and Africa during the Plio-Pleistocene (supplemental material) |journal=Biology |language=en |volume=11 |issue=9 |pages=1258 |doi=10.3390/biology11091258 |issn=2079-7737 |pmc=9495906 |pmid=36138737 |doi-access=free }}
