Eric Rouleau

Biography
He was born Elie Raffoul to a Jewish family in Cairo in 1926.{{cite journal|last=Butler|first=Linda|title=Eric Rouleau|journal=Journal of Palestine Studies|volume=44|issue=4|year=2015|doi=10.1525/jps.2015.44.4.57|page=57}} Rouleau joined The Egyptian Gazette in 1943.{{cite web|last=Garesh|first=Alain|title=Eric Rouleau: The great journalist of the Near East|url=https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/blog/2015/3/11/eric-rouleau-the-great-journalist-of-the-near-east|publisher=The New Arab|date=10 March 2015|accessdate=11 September 2016}} His communist convictions led to his being harassed by the police and he went into exile in 1951. He joined the Agence France-Presse, and in 1955 Le Monde, for which he covered the Iranian Revolution. He also contributed pieces to Le Monde diplomatique. French President François Mitterrand charged him in 1984 with an informal diplomatic mission to Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi to negotiate the withdrawal of Libyan troops installed in Chad.{{cite book|last=Lacouture|first=Jean |authorlink=Jean Lacouture|title=Mitterrand: une histoire de Français|volume=II: Les Vertiges du sommet|year=1998|publisher=Éditions du Seuil|location=Paris|language=French|isbn=2-02-035167-6|pages=211–212}} The mission was successful, and he was appointed as French ambassador to Tunisia from 1985 to 1986. He died in Uzès, France, on 25 February 2015.
