It was first mentioned in 850 as Ermkina, and means "settlement of the people of Ero or Eric (person)".{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/erichem |title=Erichem - (geografische naam) |website=Etymolgiebank |access-date=21 March 2022 |language=nl |quote=I assume they meant Ero, because it usually started with e."}} The village developed along a former stream as a stretched out esdorp. The St. Joris Church has a 14th-century tower with a 13th-century base. The church dates from around 1500.{{cite web|url=https://dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu05_01/sten009monu05_01_0078.php |title=Erichem |author=Ronald Stenvert & Sabine Broekhoven |page=171 |year=2000 |publisher=Waanders |location=Zwolle |isbn=90 400 9406 3 |language=nl |access-date=20 March 2022}} In 1840, it was home to 438 people.{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/erichem |title=Erichem |website=Plaatsengids |access-date=21 March 2022 |language=nl}}
