Ernest Mead

He went on to Harvard University to earn his Ph.D. Mead's musical research focused on instrumental ensembles; his doctoral dissertation focused on the instrumental works of Girolamo Frescobaldi.{{cite web |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=AqT3MQAACAAJ&q=%22ernest+c.+mead%22 |title=The instrumental ensemble canzonas of Girolamo Frescobaldi |last=Mead |first=Ernest C. |year=1983 |publisher=Harvard University}} He returned to the University of Virginia in 1953 as a professor.

As chairman of the McIntire School of Music in the University of Virginia College of Arts and Sciences, Mead was instrumental in securing donations to establish the U.Va. From 1972 on, Mead taught a liberal arts seminar at the university, continuing into his retirement.
