Escherichia hermannii is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped species of bacterium. Strains of this species were originally isolated from human wounds, sputum, and stool. The species is named for American microbiologists George J. Hermann and Lloyd G. Herman.{{cite journal|last1=Brenner|first1=DJ|last2=Davis|first2=BR|last3=Steigerwalt|first3=AG|last4=Riddle|first4=CF|last5=McWhorter|first5=AC|last6=Allen|first6=SD|last7=Farmer JJ|first7=3rd|last8=Saitoh|first8=Y|last9=Fanning|first9=GR|title=Atypical biogroups of Escherichia coli found in clinical specimens and description of Escherichia hermannii sp. nov.|journal=Journal of Clinical Microbiology|date=April 1982|volume=15|issue=4|pages=703–13|doi=10.1128/JCM.15.4.703-713.1982|pmid=7040466|pmc=272169}}

A 2016 publication proposed reclassifying E. hermannii as a species of a new genus within the Enterobacteriaceae, Atlantibacter, a change which would rename the species to Atlantibacter hermannii.{{cite journal|last1=Hata|first1=H|last2=Natori|first2=T|last3=Mizuno|first3=T|last4=Kanazawa|first4=I|last5=Eldesouky|first5=I|last6=Hayashi|first6=M|last7=Miyata|first7=M|last8=Fukunaga|first8=H|last9=Ohji|first9=S|last10=Hosoyama|first10=A|last11=Aono|first11=E|last12=Yamazoe|first12=A|last13=Tsuchikane|first13=K|last14=Fujita|first14=N|last15=Ezaki|first15=T|title=Phylogenetics of family Enterobacteriaceae and proposal to reclassify Escherichia hermannii and Salmonella subterranea as Atlantibacter hermannii and Atlantibacter subterranea gen. nov., comb. nov.|journal=Microbiology and Immunology|date=May 2016|volume=60|issue=5|pages=303–11|pmid=26970508|doi=10.1111/1348-0421.12374|s2cid=32594451|doi-access=free}} The LPSN considers the new name a synonym, not validly published (i.e. made outside of IJSB and IJSEM) under the ICNP.{{cite web |title=Species: Atlantibacter hermannii |url=https://lpsn.dsmz.de/species/atlantibacter-hermannii |website=lpsn.dsmz.de |language=en}} GTDB and NCBI agree with the 2016 reassignment.{{cite web |title=GTDB - Tree at g__Atlantibacter |url=https://gtdb.ecogenomic.org/tree?r=g__Atlantibacter |website=gtdb.ecogenomic.org}}{{cite web |title=Taxonomy browser (Atlantibacter) |url=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Taxonomy/Browser/wwwtax.cgi?mode=Undef&id=1903434&lvl=3&lin=f&keep=1&srchmode=1&unlock |website=www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov}}

Pathogenicity
