The company was established in Palo Alto on November 9, 2015, by Android co-founder Andy Rubin, with funding from Playground Global. In December 2016, Brian Wallace, who left his occupation as chief marketing officer for Magic Leap a month prior, was reportedly working with Rubin. Trademarks with the 'Essential' brand name were also filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office that same month.{{Cite web|url=https://www.theverge.com/2017/1/13/14267300/android-andy-rubin-interview-new-company-essential|title=Android's co-founder is building a new company and a new kind of smartphone|last=Welch|first=Chris|date=January 13, 2017|work=The Verge|access-date=May 30, 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170612023908/https://www.theverge.com/2017/1/13/14267300/android-andy-rubin-interview-new-company-essential|archive-date=June 12, 2017|url-status=live}}
