History

ECS opened in 1969 to replace the former Estevan Collegiate Institute, at a cost of $3.7 million with a maximum student capacity of 1,100. The former high school became the city's junior high until its demolition in 2005.{{Cite web |title=ECI Demolition - |url=https://gent.name/sask:towns:estevan:eci:demo |access-date=2025-02-12 |website=gent.name}}

Features of the 193,000 square foot building include a 'cafetorium', which can function as both the school's cafeteria and its auditorium, as well as a central courtyard with a palm tree in the center.{{Cite web |date=2024-12-09 |title=Photos: ECS is to perform Mamma Mia! musical |url=https://www.sasktoday.ca/southeast/estevan-mercury/photos-ecs-is-to-perform-mamma-mia-musical-this-weekend-9923423 |access-date=2025-02-13 |website=SaskToday.ca |language=en}}{{Cite web |title=Back to school: advice for the new grade nine's and the outgoing grade 12 students |url=https://www.discoverestevan.com/articles/back-to-school-advice-for-the-new-grade-nines-and-the-outgoing-grade-12-students |access-date=2025-02-13 |website=DiscoverEstevan}}

As a comprehensive high school, ECS offers a range of classes for students including those focused on trades like autobody and mechanics along with traditional high school options.{{Cite web |title=About Us |url=https://echs.secpsd.ca/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1114499&type=d&pREC_ID=1378884 |access-date=2025-02-13 |website=echs.secpsd.ca |language=en}}

Given that the school has never reached its intended capacity, plans are being explored to add middle school grades to ECS in the future.{{Cite web |title=Combination school still a possibility in Estevan |url=https://discoverestevan.com/articles/combination-school-still-a-possibility-in-estevan- |access-date=2025-02-15 |website=DiscoverEstevan}}

Extracurriculars

Athletic teams at ECS compete under the name "Elecs" in a wide range of sports like basketball, volleyball and soccer.

One of the most highly anticipated sports events of the year is the annual McLeod Series against the rival Weyburn Comprehensive School, a four-game total points series named for Norman Leslie McLeod, who donated the trophy in the early 1930s.{{Cite web |title=Historic McLeod Series altered by weather, new dates set |url=https://discoverweyburn.com/articles/historic-mcleod-series-altered-by-weather-new-dates-set |access-date=2025-02-12 |website=DiscoverWeyburn}}
