Early life

Born and raised in Cork, Twomey first played hurling to a high standard as a student at Presentation Brothers College (PBC). He was captain of the PBC hurling team that claimed the Munster U16½C HC title in 2018 after a 1-18 to 0-12 defeat of Scoil Ruáin in the final.{{cite web|url=https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-30888384.html|title=After decades in the doldrums, PBC hurlers finally having a ball|publisher=Irish Examiner|date=28 November 2018|access-date=16 October 2022|first=Eoghan|last=Cormican}} Twomey later studied at University College Cork and was added to their Fitzgibbon Cup panel in 2023.{{cite web|url=https://www.balls.ie/gaa/2023-fitzgibbon-cup-hurlers-539031|title=10 Players To Watch Out For In The 2023 Fitzgibbon Cup|publisher=balls.ie|date=14 January 2023|access-date=16 October 2023|first=|last=}}

Club career

A family connection resulted in Twomey playing some juvenile hurling and Gaelic football with the Kilshannig club in Avondhu; however, his underage club career began in earnest with the St Finbarr's club in Cork.{{cite web|url=https://admin.sportsmanager.ie/cake/gaa2/kilshannig/news/47934/om_u_ll_oot_ll_l_ll_o|title=Thomas Russell U10 Footballers V Ballinora|publisher=Kilshannig GAA website|date=22 May 2011|access-date=28 November 2021|first=|last=}} He had his first success in 2020 when he captained St Finbarr's to a 2-21 to 3-11 defeat of Sarsfields to claim the Cork Premier 1 MHC title.{{cite web|url=https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-40050224.html|title=Jack Cahalane cracker helps St Finbarr's to Cork minor hurling glory|publisher=Irish Examiner|date=16 September 2020|access-date=16 October 2022|first=Eoghan|last=Cormican}}
