Eurostar Group is a holding company created by SNCF Voyageurs, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, NMBS/SNCB, and Federated Hermes Infrastructure in 2022 with the aim of merging the operations of Thalys and Eurostar high-speed rail services between France, United Kingdom, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany.{{Cite web |date=2022-05-02 |title=Eurostar, Thalys merge to bring more high-speed rail routes to Europe |url=https://www.railway-technology.com/news/eurostar-thalys-high-speed-rail/ |access-date=2022-05-02 |website=Railway Technology |language=en-US |archive-date=2022-09-29 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220929054903/https://www.railway-technology.com/news/eurostar-thalys-high-speed-rail/ |url-status=live }}
History
In September 2019, Eurostar and Thalys shareholders introduced a plan to merge the two companies, a project named Green Speed. Both companies already operate in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, with Eurostar also operating in the United Kingdom, and Thalys also operating in Germany, and SNCF already owns a majority stake in both of them. The project aims at reducing costs, and at providing a more seamless experience to passengers, with the use of a single ticketing system and loyalty program.{{Cite web |date=2019-09-27 |title=Eurostar-Thalys merger proposal revealed |url=https://www.railjournal.com/passenger/high-speed/eurostar-thalys-merger-proposal-revealed/ |access-date=2022-05-02 |website=International Railway Journal |language=en-GB |archive-date=2020-09-23 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200923153703/https://www.railjournal.com/passenger/high-speed/eurostar-thalys-merger-proposal-revealed/ |url-status=live }}
After being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project resumed in October 2021. It was announced that both services would be operated under the Eurostar brand, the Thalys brand being dropped,{{Cite web |date=2021-10-04 |title=Eurostar brand to be retained in Thalys merger |url=https://www.railjournal.com/financial/eurostar-brand-to-be-retained-in-thalys-merger/ |access-date=2022-05-02 |website=International Railway Journal |language=en-GB |archive-date=2022-04-06 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220406195334/https://www.railjournal.com/financial/eurostar-brand-to-be-retained-in-thalys-merger/ |url-status=live }} with the existing Eurostar service being renamed Eurostar Blue and the existing Thalys service Eurostar Red.{{Cite web |date=2022-03-31 |title=Fusion Eurostar-Thalys : la Commission européenne donne son feu vert |url=https://lexpansion.lexpress.fr/actualite-economique/fusion-eurostar-thalys-la-commission-europeenne-donne-son-feu-vert_2170876.html |access-date=2022-05-02 |website=LExpansion.com |language=fr |archive-date=2022-04-27 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220427172125/https://lexpansion.lexpress.fr/actualite-economique/fusion-eurostar-thalys-la-commission-europeenne-donne-son-feu-vert_2170876.html |url-status=live }}
The European Commission approved the planned merger on 29 March 2022.{{Cite web |date=2022-03-29 |title=Eurostar-Thalys merger on track, as EU gives approval |url=https://www.politico.eu/article/commission-approves-eurostar-thalys-merger/ |access-date=2022-05-02 |website=POLITICO |language=en-US |archive-date=2022-05-02 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220502102624/https://www.politico.eu/article/commission-approves-eurostar-thalys-merger/ |url-status=live }}
In April 2022, the new holding company, Eurostar Group, was established in Belgium. It is owned by the previous shareholders of Eurostar and Thalys, with SNCF retaining its majority stake.
Criticism
The European Passengers’ Federation believes that the merger will give the new company a monopoly position of the market they serve, and lead to higher ticket prices for passengers.{{Cite web |title='Merger Eurostar and Thalys leads to more expensive train ticket' |url=https://www.railtech.com/policy/2021/04/06/merger-eurostar-and-thalys-leads-to-more-expensive-train-ticket/ |access-date=2022-05-02 |website=RailTech.com |date=6 April 2021 |language=en-GB |archive-date=2022-07-03 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220703050720/https://www.railtech.com/policy/2021/04/06/merger-eurostar-and-thalys-leads-to-more-expensive-train-ticket/ |url-status=live }}
