The FGF-1 internal ribosome entry site (IRES) is an RNA element present in the 5' UTR of the mRNA of fibroblast growth factor 1 and allows cap-independent translation. It is thought that FGF-1 internal ribosome entry site (IRES) activity is strictly controlled and highly tissue specific.{{cite journal | vauthors = Martineau Y, Le Bec C, Monbrun L, Allo V, Chiu IM, Danos O, Moine H, Prats H, Prats AC | title = Internal ribosome entry site structural motifs conserved among mammalian fibroblast growth factor 1 alternatively spliced mRNAs | journal = Molecular and Cellular Biology | volume = 24 | issue = 17 | pages = 7622–7635 | date = September 2004 | pmid = 15314170 | pmc = 507008 | doi = 10.1128/MCB.24.17.7622-7635.2004 }}
