Materials

The Fairphone 4 is made with Fairtrade-certified gold, aluminum from Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard certified vendors, fair tungsten from Rwanda, recycled tin, rare earth minerals, and plastics.

Modular design

The phone's modular design is constructed of seven modules, making it easier to repair than most smartphones. The rear of the phone can be removed without using tools. Having removed the rear, the battery can be lifted out and replaced. The display is easily removed using a regular Phillips #00 screwdriver, as well as the different modules.{{Cite AV media |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Uq1v64_RCA |title=Fairphone 4 Teardown: If Only Apple Made Phones Like This… |date=2021-11-30 |last=iFixit |access-date=2024-06-23 |via=YouTube}}

Reception

However, the lack of a headphone jack was criticized, along with the occasional sluggish performance and the quality of the camera and fingerprint sensor.{{Cite web|url=https://www.techradar.com/reviews/fairphone-4 |title=Hands on: Fairphone 4 review |publisher=TechRadar |date=2021-10-29 |last=Bedford |first=Tom |access-date=2022-07-06}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/oct/15/fairphone-4-review-ethical-repairable-phone-gets-big-upgrade |title=Fairphone 4 review: ethical repairable phone gets big upgrade |work=The Guardian |date=2021-10-15 |last=Gibbs |first=Samuel |access-date=2022-07-06}}{{Cite web |title=A Smartphone That Lasts a Decade? GrapheneOS criticized Fairphone 4 for being shipped with publicly available private keys for the firmware and stock operating system, causing security features such as verified boot and hardware keystore to break, and for not providing firmware updates on time."[https://twitter.com/GrapheneOS/status/1546224158769659904 Fairphone 4 was shipped with publicly available private keys for the firmware and stock OS.]", GrapheneOS on Twitter, 10 Jul 2022.
