There are two criteria for nomination to be inducted into the Fictitious Athlete Hall of Fame: the character must be a fictitious athlete or athletic supporting role appearing after 1970. In 2015 a "veterans" category was opened, which accepts nominees from before 1970.

Voting in the Fictitious Athlete Hall of Fame is public. There are three rounds of voting each year: one preliminary vote to narrow the field, a second vote to refine the nominees, and a final vote to determine the inductees.

Inaugural induction

Rocky Balboa, from the Rocky film series, was chosen as the inaugural induction to start the Fictitious Athlete Hall of Fame.{{cite web|last1=Greene|first1=Jerry|title=Fictitious Hall has a lot of character(s)|url=http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/os-jerry-greene-cheap-seats-0503-20150502-column.html|website=Orlando Sentinel|publisher=Orlando Sentinel|date=May 2, 2015}} Buchner stated that the very inspiration for creating the page was seeing outrage at Sylvester Stallone being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame for Rocky.

2014 inductions

In 2014, three fictional athletes and one contributor were selected.{{cite web|title=Ep. 13: Kirk Buchner, Curator: Fictional Athlete HOF, Debate Greatest Movie Athletes Ever|url=https://soundcloud.com/permissiongrantedpodcast/episode-13-guest-kirk-buchner-fictitious-movie-athlete-hall-of-fame|website=SoundCloud|publisher=Permission Granted Podcast}}{{cite news|last1=Perry|first1=Dwight|title=Where Is the Love for Gus the Kicking Mule?|url=https://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-392965533.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181115100600/https://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-392965533.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=November 15, 2018|publisher=The Seattle Times|date=December 7, 2014}}{{cite news|last1=Froberg|first1=Tim|title=Fictitious sports world filled with classic characters|url=http://www.postcrescent.com/story/entertainment/movies/2014/12/24/fictitious-sports-world-filled-classic-characters/20860943/|publisher=The Post-Crescent|date=December 24, 2014}}{{cite news|last1=Krah|first1=Steve|title=Fictitious Athlete Hall of Fame welcomes "Crash" Davis, Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn and Roy Hobbs|url=http://www.elkharttruth.com/sports/Season-Tickets/2014/12/02/Fictitious-Athlete-Hall-of-Fame-welcomes-Crash-Davis-Ricky-Wild-Thing-Vaughn-and-Roy-Hobbs.html|website=The Elkhart Truth|publisher=The Elkhart Truth|date=December 2, 2014}}{{cite news|last1=Clinton|first1=Jared|title=The five greatest silver screen hockey stars of all-time|url=http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/the-five-greatest-silver-screen-hockey-stars-of-all-time/|publisher=The Hockey News|date=December 30, 2014}}
