Production

Fireworks was written by Kim Soo-hyun, and was his first work of the new millennium. Jeong Eul-young, who Kim had previously worked with in Men of the Bath House, directed the series. The script was written as filming progressed with no concrete synopsis.{{Cite web |title= |script-title=ko:김수현 새작품 "내용이 뭐길래" |url=https://www.kmib.co.kr/article/viewDetail.asp?newsClusterNo=01100201.20000120000001701 |access-date=2024-03-19 |website=Kukmin Ilbo |archive-date=2024-03-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240319201130/https://www.kmib.co.kr/article/viewDetail.asp?newsClusterNo=01100201.20000120000001701 |url-status=live }} Early filming took place in Thailand starting from 15 January 2000, in spots like downtown Bangkok and Pattaya Beach.

Ratings and reception

Fireworks was initially unsuccessful—its first episode achieved ratings of 10.7%, a low for the time. The series' low ratings were attributed to popularity of MBC's {{Ill|Truth (2000 TV series)|lt=Truth|ko|진실 (2000년 드라마)}}, which aired in the same timeslot.{{Cite web |last= |date=2000-03-28 |title= |script-title=ko:드라마 '불꽃', 뒤집기 성공할까 |url=https://www.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2000/03/28/2000032870367.html |access-date=2024-03-19 |website=Chosun Ilbo |language=ko |archive-date=2024-03-15 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240315163544/https://www.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2000/03/28/2000032870367.html |url-status=live }} Early episodes drew criticism from viewers, who found the development of Ji-hyun and Kang-wook's relationship implausible and thought Lee Geung-young and Lee Young-ae unfit for their roles.{{Cite web |date=2000-02-11 |title= |script-title=ko:드라마 ‘불꽃’초반 불길 시원찮네 |url=https://www.seoul.co.kr/news/newsView.php?id=20000211016001 |access-date=2024-03-19 |website=Seoul Shinmun |language=ko}}{{Cite web |title= |script-title=ko:SBS '불꽃' 시청률 10%대 부진…시청자 비판만 줄이어 |url=https://www.kmib.co.kr/article/viewDetail.asp?newsClusterNo=01100201.20000209000002201 |access-date=2024-03-19 |website=Kukmin Ilbo |archive-date=2024-03-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240319201131/https://www.kmib.co.kr/article/viewDetail.asp?newsClusterNo=01100201.20000209000002201 |url-status=live }} After staying on an average rating of 15%, the drama passed the 20% mark for the first time with its 10th episode.{{Cite web |date=2000-03-07 |title= |script-title=ko:SBS '불꽃' 3월엔 활활 타오를까…극중 갈등구조 본격화 |url=https://www.donga.com/news/article/all/20000307/7514819/1 |access-date=2024-03-19 |website=The Dong-a Ilbo |language=ko |archive-date=2024-03-15 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240315163629/https://www.donga.com/news/article/all/20000307/7514819/1 |url-status=live }} The final episode exceeded the 30% mark with a 36.7%, the show's highest rating yet.{{Cite web |date=2000-05-18 |title= |script-title=ko:SBS 드라마 '불꽃' 18일 끝나 |url=https://www.joongang.co.kr/article/3917863 |access-date=2024-03-19 |website=JoongAng Ilbo |language=ko |archive-date=2024-03-15 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240315163540/https://www.joongang.co.kr/article/3917863 |url-status=live }} Audiences were critical of its ending, which was panned as unrealistic. The Citizens' Coalition for Democratic Media picked Fireworks as the worst program of April 2000, proclaiming that the show depicted "a twisted view of love".{{Cite web |title= |script-title=ko:[방송가] 4월의 좋은 방송에 `PD수첩' |url=https://n.news.naver.com/mnews/article/009/0000014307?sid=103 |access-date=2024-03-19 |website= |publisher=Maeil Business Newspaper |language=ko |via=Naver |archive-date=2024-03-19 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240319201130/https://n.news.naver.com/mnews/article/009/0000014307?sid=103 |url-status=live }}
