Critical appraisal

The gallery's opening received a considerable evaluation in the press. The Guardian criticized the sloping walls and the architect, Viñoly.{{cite news|author=Rowan Moore |url=https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2011/sep/17/rafael-vinoly-firstsite-colchester-review |title=Firstsite – review | Art and design |publisher=The Observer |date= 2011-09-18|access-date=2011-12-15 |location=London}} It also examined it in terms of the economic expectations towards it and in comparison with other regional galleries.{{cite news|author=Maev Kennedy |url=https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2011/sep/22/colchester-firstsite-for-sore-eyes |title=Colchester's Firstsite for sore eyes | Art and design |publisher=The Guardian |date= 2011-09-22|access-date=2011-12-15 |location=London}} However, The Independent praised the inaugural exhibition Camulodunum.{{cite news|last=McLean |first=Laura |url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/reviews/camulodunum-firstsite-colchester-2373694.html |title=Camulodunum, Firstsite, Colchester - Reviews - Art |publisher=The Independent |date=2011-10-21 |access-date=2011-12-15 |location=London}} The Daily Telegraph has criticized the expense of the project,{{cite news|author=Art |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/art/8827535/firstsite-gallery-Colchester-25-million-well-spent.html |title=firstsite gallery, Colchester: £25 million well-spent? |publisher=The Daily Telegraph |date= 2011-10-14|access-date=2011-12-15 |location=London}} which cost £25,542,701 to build, and also highlighted concerns that more than half of its 147,000 annual visitors only entered to use the lavatory.{{cite web|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/art/10638056/28m-Firstsite-Gallery-only-used-by-people-to-spend-a-penny.html |title=Firstsite gallery only used by people to spend a penny|publisher=www.telegraph.co.uk|date=2014-02-14 |access-date=2018-01-27}} In 2015 Firstsite had its status as an Arts Council funded National Portfolio Organisation withdrawn.{{cite web|url=http://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/local/colchester/11790884.Firstsite_in_funding_crisis/|publisher=Colchester Gazette|title=Firstsite in Funding Crisis|date=2015-02-15 |access-date=2018-01-27}}{{cite web|url=https://www.a-n.co.uk/news/firstsite-to-lose-arts-council-england-npo-status |title=Firstsite to Lose Arts Council England NPO Status|publisher=Artists Newsletter|date=2015-02-16 |access-date=2018-01-27}} The Arts Council consequently reduced their annual subsidy to Firstsite by £10 per year from £814,527 to £814,517.{{cite web|url=https://www.artsprofessional.co.uk/news/eno-and-firstsite-gallery-lose-national-portfolio-status|title=Firstsite Gallery Lose National Portfolio Status|publisher=www.artsprofessional.co.uk|date=2015-02-15 |access-date=2018-01-27}}

In 2021, Ai Weiwei was invited to submit a piece for the virtual UK art exhibition The Great Big Art Exhibition, which was organised by Firstsite. Ai's piece, called Postcard for Political Prisoners, incorporated a photograph of the running machine used by Assange in the Ecuadorian embassy. After initially accepting Ai's idea, Firstsite's director said that it could not include his project "due to time constraints, and because it did not fit with the concept of the exhibition". Ai said he thought the reason for the rejection was that the exhibition did not "want to touch on a topic like Assange".{{cite news |last1=Batty |first1=David |title=Ai Weiwei accuses curators of rejecting artwork over Julian Assange content |url=https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2021/jun/02/ai-weiwei-accuses-curators-of-rejecting-artwork-over-julian-assange-content?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other |access-date=3 June 2021 |work=The Guardian |date=2 June 2021 |language=en}}
