The drink became infamous for being linked to the Jonestown mass murder-and-suicide when it was learned that the cyanide poison taken by or forcibly administered to the commune's members was placed in Flavor Aid. Large barrels filled with the grape variety, laced with the cyanide and a variety of tranquillizer drugs, were found half-consumed amidst the hundreds of bodies.{{cite web|last=Higgins|first=Chris|title=Stop Saying 'Drink the Kool-Aid'|url=https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/11/stop-saying-drink-the-kool-aid/264957/|work=The Atlantic|accessdate=July 22, 2013|date=8 November 2012}}{{Cite web |url=https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6353579 |title='Jonestown': Portrait of a Disturbed Cult Leader |work=Day to Day |date=October 20, 2006 |accessdate=September 4, 2014 }}{{cite web |url=http://www.wordspy.com/words/drinktheKool-Aid.asp |title=Wordspy article on the expression "Drink the Kool-Aid," October 27, 1998 |accessdate=January 29, 2008 |author=Paul McFedries |date=1998-10-27 |publisher=Logophilia Limited, www.wordspy.com |archive-date=October 15, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141015025908/http://www.wordspy.com/words/drinktheKool-Aid.asp |url-status=dead }}
Kool-Aid, rather than Flavor Aid, is usually erroneously referred to as the drink used in the massacre. The association with Kool-Aid has spawned the figure of speech "drink the Kool-Aid".{{cite web|last=Higgins|first=Chris|title=Stop Saying 'Drink the Kool-Aid'|url=https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/11/stop-saying-drink-the-kool-aid/264957/|work=The Atlantic|accessdate=July 22, 2013|date=8 November 2012}}{{Cite web |url=https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6353579 |title='Jonestown': Portrait of a Disturbed Cult Leader |work=Day to Day |date=October 20, 2006 |accessdate=September 4, 2014 }}{{cite web |url=http://www.wordspy.com/words/drinktheKool-Aid.asp |title=Wordspy article on the expression "Drink the Kool-Aid," October 27, 1998 |accessdate=January 29, 2008 |author=Paul McFedries |date=1998-10-27 |publisher=Logophilia Limited, www.wordspy.com |archive-date=October 15, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141015025908/http://www.wordspy.com/words/drinktheKool-Aid.asp |url-status=dead }} Criminal investigators testifying at the Jonestown inquest spoke of finding packets of "Kool aid" (sic), and eyewitnesses to the incident are also recorded as speaking of "kool aid" or "Cool Aid."{{cite web |url=http://jonestown.sdsu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/GuyanaInquest.pdf |title=Guyana inquest |accessdate=}}
