History

According to Petersen, as editor of InsideFlyer, he saw FlyerTalk as a way to allow readers to combine their knowledge into a knowledge base.{{cite news | first=Jessica | last=Tsai | title=Power to the People | date=December 2007 | url=http://www.destinationcrm.com/articles/default.asp?ArticleID=7395 | work=CRM Magazine | accessdate=2007-12-28 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071204184455/http://www.destinationcrm.com/articles/default.asp?ArticleID=7395 | archive-date=2007-12-04 | url-status=dead }} On 16 November 2010, Petersen stated that he would leave FlyerTalk at the end of the year;{{Cite web|url=http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/15147877-post1.html|title = FlyerTalk Forums - View Single Post - Come Fly to Me — the Great FlyerTalk Mileage Run}} then in March 2011, he launched MilePoint. MilePoint's brand was changed to InsideFlyer as Petersen started to build a global footprint with local languages in various countries around the world.{{Cite web |last=Randy Petersen |date=2015-10-04 |title=Milepoint is now InsideFlyer. |url=https://insideflyer.com/2015/10/04/milepoint-is-now-insideflyer/ |access-date=2023-03-31 |website=InsideFlyer |language=en-US}}

Industry Use

Some of the hotel and airline forum participants include official presences who use the site to learn about issues important to their customer base. One example of the site's influence was a wager between the Continental Airlines CEO Larry Kellner and a site member as to whether 60 or more community members would voluntarily fly (using their own miles and incurring their own out-of-pocket expenses) to a feedback meeting in Houston for the airline; 274 did.{{Cite news|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/14/technology/14iht-chat.html|title = On Board the Message Board|newspaper = The New York Times|date = 14 June 2005|last1 = Stellin|first1 = Susan}} The forum has been cited as a powerful voice in shaping airlines' reward programs{{cite web |last=Snyder |first=Brett |date=2008-05-05 |title=How Valuable is FlyerTalk? |url=https://www.cbsnews.com/news/how-valuable-is-flyertalk/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240703040406/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/how-valuable-is-flyertalk/ |archive-date=2024-07-03 |access-date=2010-04-25 |website=CBS News}}{{cite news
