Background

During a May 2024 Rolling Stone cover story for Finneas's sister, Billie Eilish, Finneas revealed he was working on a new solo album. He described feeling lonely whilst solo-producing his first album, believing that he did an "OK job", but not making songs in the best possible way they could sound. Therefore, Finneas said, "I've made a point to be hyper-collaborative. Fortunately, most of my friends are producers".{{Cite magazine |last=Martoccio |first=Angie |date=2024-05-20 |title=Finneas Has Lots More in Store |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/finneas-cover-story-outtakes-billie-eilish-1235023098/ |access-date=2024-08-13 |magazine=Rolling Stone |language=en-US}}

On August 8, 2024, Finneas announced For Cryin' Out Loud! on Instagram and released the title track as its lead single, along with a music video directed by Isaac Ravishankara.{{Cite magazine |last=Paul |first=Larisha |date=2024-08-08 |title=Finneas Learns to Love Through the Pain in Loopy 'For Cryin' Out Loud' Video |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/finneas-for-cryin-out-loud-album-announcement-1235076191/ |access-date=2024-08-13 |magazine=Rolling Stone |language=en-US}} A same-day press release characterized Finneas' creative process for the album as "steering things away from the bedroom producer mentality and to a classic studio/band environment".{{Cite web |last=Armstrong |first=Megan |date=2024-08-08 |title=Finneas Fell Down An Elevator Shaft In His 'For Cryin' Out Loud' Video |url=https://uproxx.com/pop/finneas-for-cryin-out-loud-video-album/ |access-date=2024-08-13 |website=UPROXX |language=en-US}} The album was produced during a series of live studio sessions in Los Angeles, California.{{Cite web |last=Fu |first=Eddie |date=2024-08-08 |title=FINNEAS Announces New Album For Cryin' Out Loud! |url=https://consequence.net/2024/08/finneas-for-cryin-out-loud/ |access-date=2024-08-13 |website=Consequence of Sound |language=en-US}}
