The initial race was run at the Salzburgring on June 10, 2001. The race was won by Belgian youngster Philip Cloostermans. Cloostermans finished second in the standings of the first season, behind Walter Lechner Jr..{{cite web|title=Formel VW: Sieg für Cloostermans|url=http://www.motorsport2000.de/news+936+Formel+VW+Sieg%2Bf%FCr%2BCloostermans.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140903082655/http://www.motorsport2000.de/news+936+Formel+VW+Sieg+f%FCr+Cloostermans.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=September 3, 2014|website=Motorsport2000|access-date=29 August 2014}} The following season an updated Formula Volkswagen chassis was presented. The new car had aerodynamic updates to more resemble the dimensions of a Formula 3 car. The racing format was also different for the 2002 season. Instead of one race each weekend, there were now two.{{cite web|title=Formel VW: Mit geändertem Fahrzeug in die Saison 2002|url=http://www.motorsport2000.de/news+1883+Formel+VW+Mit+ge%E4ndertem+Fahrzeug+in+die+Saison+2002.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140903082650/http://www.motorsport2000.de/news+1883+Formel+VW+Mit+ge%E4ndertem+Fahrzeug+in+die+Saison+2002.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=September 3, 2014|website=Motorsport2000|access-date=29 August 2014}} The series struggled to attract more than fifteen competitors each weekend.
