The construction work of the airport started in 2022.{{cite web|url=https://www.foshannews.net/fstt/202102/t20210205_387195.html|date=2021-02-05|title=佛山新机场争取2022年全面动工}} It will replace the existing Foshan Shadi Airport, and operate as another airport for Guangzhou and Foshan with the existing Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport continuing to operate.
