Academic career and research
Kelly obtained his first degree from Queen's University Belfast, before taking a Ph.D. in physiology there as well. He then joined Pennsylvania State University, as a postdoctoral fellow. After working in the United States, he returned to the UK as a lecturer at Southampton University. During the early part of his career, his research focused on free-radical biology and human disease, and lung damage in premature babies and cystic fibrosis patients.{{cite web |title=Fellow Profile: Professor Frank Kelly |url=https://www.plusalliance.org/press-room/fellow-profile-professor-frank-kelly |website=Plus Alliance |publisher=Arizona State University, King’s College London, and UNSW Sydney |access-date=16 April 2022}}
In 1992, Kelly moved to London and developed a new research interest in the effect of air pollution on lungs and respiratory health. He became a Senior Lecturer at St Thomas’ Hospital, where his research interests included the health effects of vitamin E,{{cite journal |display-authors=5|last1=Brigelius-Flohé |first1=Regina |last2=Kelly |first2=Frank J |last3=Salonen |first3=Jukka |last4=Neuzil |first4=Jiri |last5=Zingg |first5=Jean-Marc |last6=Azzi |first6=Angelo |title=The European perspective on vitamin E: current knowledge and future research |journal=Am J Clin Nutr |date=2002 |volume=76 |issue=4 |pages=703–16 |doi=10.1093/ajcn/76.4.703 |pmid=12324281 |url=https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article/76/4/703/4677430 |access-date=18 April 2022|doi-access=free }} before moving to King's College, London, where he was Professor of Environmental Health and Director of the Environmental Research Group.
