The program allows users to recover files that have been permanently deleted from Windows Recycle Bin. It can work with a variety of fixed and removable media, typically hard drives. FreeUndelete has been successfully used to recover digital photos from SD cards.{{cite web|url=http://joyinsimplephotos.blogspot.com/2010/11/freeundelete.html|title=Finding Joy in Simple Pleasures... FreeUndelete takes advantage of the fact that file deletion is just a minor state change in the system file index. It finds the area(s) where the file contents are located on the disk, then re-creates the index entry to undelete the file.{{cite web|url=http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/software/6003-freeundelete-20-best-free-utility-net/|title=FreeUndelete 2.0 - the best free utility on the net?|work=hexus.net|date=23 June 2006 |accessdate=2011-01-15}}
