The French submarine Espadon was a {{sclass|Requin|submarine}} built for the French Navy in the mid-1920s. Laid down in October 1923, it was launched in May 1926 and commissioned in December 1927. It was disarmed at Bizerte, Tunisia in April 1941 and captured there by Italian forces on 8 December 1942 and renamed FR 114. It was scuttled by the Italians at the Castellamare shipyard on 13 September 1943, then raised by the Germans in 1943 but not repaired.{{cite web|title=FR Espadon of the French Navy - French submarine of the Requin class - Allied Warships of WWII|url=https://uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/6081.html|website=uboat.net|accessdate=22 October 2018}}{{cite web|url=http://www.netmarine.net/bat/smarins/espadon/ancien.htm|title=Batiments ayant porté le nom d'Espadon|website=www.netmarine.net}}{{cite web |url=http://sous-marin.france.pagesperso-orange.fr/Q129.htm |title=Q 129 |website=sous-marin.france.pagesperso-orange.fr |access-date=12 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131104145713/http://sous-marin.france.pagesperso-orange.fr/Q129.htm |archive-date=4 November 2013 |url-status=dead}}Fontenoy, p. 182

Design

{{Convert|78|m|ftin|abbr=on}} long, with a beam of {{Convert|6.8|m|ftin|abbr=on}} and a draught of {{Convert|5.1|m|ftin|abbr=on}}, Requin-class submarines could dive up to {{Convert|80|m|abbr=on}}. The submarine had a surfaced displacement of {{Convert|1150|LT|t|0|lk=on}} and a submerged displacement of {{Convert|1441|LT|t|0|lk=on}}. Propulsion while surfaced was provided by two {{Convert|2900|hp|0|abbr=on}} diesel motors and two {{Convert|1800|hp|0|abbr=on}} electric motors. The submarines' electrical propulsion allowed it to attain speeds of {{Convert|9|kn}} while submerged and {{Convert|15|kn}} on the surface. Their surfaced range was {{convert|7700|nmi|km}} at {{convert|9|kn|km/h}}, and {{convert|4000|nmi|km}} at {{convert|12|kn|km/h}}, with a submerged range of {{convert|70|nmi|km}} at {{convert|5|kn|km/h}}.{{cite web |title=Requin Class French Submarines |url=https://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/requin_class.htm |website=battleships-cruisers.co |accessdate=22 October 2018}}
