Life
Schreuel was born in Maastricht, the Dutch Republic, on 14 June 1773.{{cite web|publisher=Rijksmuseum|url=https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/nl/collectie/SK-A-4703 |title=Portret van raden Syarif Bustaman Saleh, Friedrich Carl Albert Schreuel, ca. 1840|trans-title=Portrait of raden Syarif Bustaman Saleh, Friedrich Carl Albert Schreuel, ca. 1840|language=Dutch |accessdate=4 June 2013}} He joined the Dutch military at a young age. He spent some time studying under Josef Grassi of the Dresden Academy and soon made a name for himself by painting portrait miniatures.{{cite web|publisher= Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur |url=http://www.weber-gesamtausgabe.de/de/A001739 |title=Albert Schreuel |language=German |accessdate=4 June 2013}}{{cite book|last=Schidlof |first=Leo R. |title=The Miniature in Europe in the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries|volume=2|page=736|publisher=Akademische Druck- u. Schreuel is believed to have painted the portrait of the Javanese artist Raden Saleh, who was then studying in Europe, that is now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The painting dates to before 1841, because Saleh is depicted dressed as a European dandy, not as a Javanese prince, which was how he dressed beginning in that year.{{cite book |last=Oorthuizen |first=Sanne |contribution=Raden Saleh's Portrait |title=Beyond the Dutch: Indonesia, the Netherlands, and the Visual Arts from 1900 Until Now |location=Amsterdam |publisher=KIT |year=2009 |editor1-last=Knol |editor1-first=Meta |editor2-last=Raben |editor2-first=Remco |editor3-last=Zijlmans |editor3-first=Kitty |editor-link3=Kitty Zijlmans |isbn=9789460220593 |page=35}} The painting was first recorded at the Dresden Academy exhibition, at which it was a critical success. However, it has also been attributed to Saleh himself; in 2005 the Rijksmuseum was still referring to the work as a self-portrait.{{cite journal|title=Raden Saleh's Interpretation of the Arrest of Diponegoro : an Example of Indonesian "proto-nationalist" Modernism|page=264 |last=Kraus |first=Werner |journal=Archipel |volume=69 |year=2005|doi=10.3406/arch.2005.3934 |url=http://www.persee.fr/web/revues/home/prescript/article/arch_0044-8613_2005_num_69_1_3934}} The pose is one traditional in self-portraits, and no other portraits by Schreuel are known to have survived, while the style of his miniatures is different; however, this would be the only unsigned painting by Saleh, he knew Schreuel (whom he called 'Schruil'), and the brushwork is freer than is characteristic of his work. According to the Tropenmuseum, {{as of|2012|lc=yes}} they have the only known self-portrait by Saleh.{{cite web|url=http://www.tropenmuseum.nl/-/MUS/78216/Tropenmuseum/About-Tropenmuseum/Press|year=2012|title=Self-portrait by Raden Saleh|publisher=Tropenmuseum|accessdate=4 June 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131004222908/http://www.tropenmuseum.nl/-/MUS/78216/Tropenmuseum/About-Tropenmuseum/Press|archive-date=4 October 2013|url-status=dead}}
Schreuel died in Dresden, Germany, in 1853.
