Friedrich Carl Albert Schreuel

He is recorded as painting by 1788{{cite web|url= https://rkd.nl/en/explore/artists/419213 |title=Schreuel, Frederik Karel Albert |publisher=Netherlands Institute for Art History |language=Dutch |accessdate=4 June 2013}} and eventually left the military to begin studying art, first in Berlin then, in 1805, in Dresden. Schreuel is believed to have painted the portrait of the Javanese artist Raden Saleh, who was then studying in Europe, that is now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. However, it has also been attributed to Saleh himself; in 2005 the Rijksmuseum was still referring to the work as a self-portrait.{{cite journal|title=Raden Saleh's Interpretation of the Arrest of Diponegoro : an Example of Indonesian "proto-nationalist" Modernism|page=264 |last=Kraus |first=Werner |journal=Archipel |volume=69 |year=2005|doi=10.3406/arch.2005.3934 |url=http://www.persee.fr/web/revues/home/prescript/article/arch_0044-8613_2005_num_69_1_3934}} The pose is one traditional in self-portraits, and no other portraits by Schreuel are known to have survived, while the style of his miniatures is different; however, this would be the only unsigned painting by Saleh, he knew Schreuel (whom he called 'Schruil'), and the brushwork is freer than is characteristic of his work.
