The act's name derives from two incidental characters mentioned in one couplet of Byron's Don Juan: "Lady Fitz-Frisky, and Miss Maevia Mannish, / Both longed extremely to be sung in Spanish" (Canto XI, LIII.){{cite web|url=http://exeuntmagazine.com/features/frisky-and-mannish/ |first=Natasha |last=Tripney |title=Interview: Frisky & Mannish |publisher=exeuntmagazine.com |date=13 July 2011}}

Jones was born in south-west London and brought up in Surrey, whilst Corcoran hails from Greater Manchester.{{cite news|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/theatre/edinburgh-festival/7954675/Edinburgh-Festival-2010-Frisky-and-Mannish-interview.html |first=Dominic |last=Cavendish |title=Edinburgh Festival 2010: Frisky and Mannish interview |work=The Telegraph |date=19 August 2010 | location=London}}{{cite web|url=http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/theguide/Interview-Frisky-And-Mannish-.5534844.jp |first=Liam |last=Rudden |title=Interview: Laura Corcoran and Matthew Jones |work=Edinburgh Evening News |date=7 August 2009}} They first met as undergraduates at Oxford University and began a partnership writing comic songs for the student sketch troupe The Oxford Revue.{{cite web|url=http://www.comedy.co.uk/live/feature/frisky_and_mannish_interview/ |title=Frisky and Mannish interview |date=11 April 2011 |publisher=British Comedy Guide |accessdate=26 April 2011}} After graduating, they moved into a shared flat in London.{{cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/theatre-dance/features/glam-rocks-meet-the-stars-who-are-taking-cabaret-mainstream-2301082.html |title=Glam rocks: Meet the stars who are taking cabaret mainstream |work=The Independent |accessdate=16 September 2011 |location=London}}

On 5 March 2008, at a music hall-themed fundraiser on a barge in Battersea, Corcoran and Jones decided to "mess around with a few songs," and performed pastiches of "Papa Don't Preach" (as an operatic aria), "Eye of the Tiger" (in a bluegrass style), "I'd Do Anything for Love" (sung by a young child), and "Come On Eileen" (as a heartfelt ballad.) Their performance led to a "firm booking for an hour-long show," after which the pair developed a fuller concept and "reverse-engineered some sort of coherent act into existence."{{cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2014/aug/19/frisky-and-mannish-behind-the-joke-beep-pussycat-dolls?CMP=twt_gu |title=Frisky & Mannish: taking the beep out of the Pussycat Dolls |work=The Guardian |date=19 August 2014 |accessdate=28 August 2014 |last1=Mannish |first1=Frisky &. }}
