Frontolysis

Frontolysis (also known as Frontal decay) in meteorology, is the dissipation or weakening of an atmospheric front.{{cite book|last=Thralls|first=Zoe A.|title=The Teaching of Geography|url=https://archive.org/details/teachingofgeogra0000thra/page/57/mode/1up |accessdate = 2023-05-13 |year=1958|publisher=Appleton-Century-Crofts|page=57}} It is generally described as a decrease in temperature gradients between colliding air masses or can be caused by a shift in wind pattern.{{Cite web |title=Frontolysis - (Meteorology) - Vocab, Definition, Explanations {{!}} Fiveable |url=https://library.fiveable.me/key-terms/meteorology/frontolysis |access-date=2024-10-31 |website=library.fiveable.me}}

In contrary to areas of "Frontogenesis", the areas where air masses diverge are called areas of frontolysis.
