SexyBack Dance Club

Critical reception

Rolling Stone editor Laura Checkoway, who attended the tour at the Madison Square Garden in April 2007, called the show "strictly grown and sexy" in her review.{{cite magazine | url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/justin-timberlake-brings-futuresex-to-madison-square-garden-live-report-20070817 | title=Justin Timberlake Brings 'FutureSex' to Madison Square Garden: Live Report | magazine=Rolling Stone | date=August 17, 2007 | access-date=February 28, 2016 | author=Checkoway, Laura}} After attending the second Madison Square Garden date in August, Sia Michel from The New York Times thought "since his last tour, for 2002's multiplatinum Justified, he has learned how to project sex-symbol edge. During an ambitious, well-oiled spectacle of nearly three hours, this New Justin cursed, gyrated and mimicked bedroom acts with his lingerie-clad dancers."{{cite web | url=https://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/09/arts/music/09timb.html?_r=0 | title=He's Bringing Commitment Back (and Not in a Box) | work=The New York Times | date=February 9, 2007 | access-date=February 29, 2016 | author=Michel, Sia}} After attending The O2, London date, musicOMH's Jonny Carey wrote, "Tonight proved that as well as being responsible for some of this decade's best pop moments, Justin Timberlake is among the best performers and will be continuing to headline venues of this stature for years to come."{{Cite news |url=https://www.musicomh.com/music/gigs/justin-timberlake_0707.htm |title=Justin Timberlake |last=Carey |first=Jonny |work=musicOMH |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100424013635/https://www.musicomh.com/music/gigs/justin-timberlake_0707.htm |date=July 10, 2007 |archive-date=April 24, 2010}}

Broadcast and recordings

It was announced in May 2007 that Timberlake signed a deal with the HBO network to broadcast the concert and then release it on DVD. The Madison Square Garden date for the second North American leg of the tour was added for this reason by HBO. The concert was filmed on the night of the show, August 16, and aired September 3, 2007. It also marked the first time that Timberlake would host a concert at Madison Square Garden where his boy band NSYNC also had their concert there back in 2000, which was also an HBO special.{{cite web|url=http://tob.hollywood.com/2007/05/03/justin-timberlake-brings-sexy-back-to-hbo/ |title=Justin Timberlake signs concert special deal with HBO |access-date=2008-12-14 |work=Hollywood.com |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080723211442/http://tob.hollywood.com/2007/05/03/justin-timberlake-brings-sexy-back-to-hbo/ |archive-date=2008-07-23 }}
