The Future Combat Air System (FCAS), ({{langx|fr|Système de Combat Aérien du Futur; SCAF}}; {{langx|de|Zukünftiges Luftkampfsystem}}; {{langx|es|Futuro Sistema Aéreo de Combate; FSAC}}) is a European combat system of systems under development by Dassault Aviation, Airbus and Indra Sistemas. The FCAS will consist of a Next-Generation Weapon System (NGWS) as well as other air assets in the future operational battlespace.{{cite web |last=Jennings |first=Gareth |date=15 November 2018 |title=Air superiority and nuclear deterrence dictate manned future fighter for France |url=https://www.janes.com/article/84623/air-superiority-and-nuclear-deterrence-dictate-manned-future-fighter-for-france |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181115171531/https://www.janes.com/article/84623/air-superiority-and-nuclear-deterrence-dictate-manned-future-fighter-for-france |archive-date=15 November 2018 |website=Janes}}{{cite web |last=Pike |first=John |title=France + Germany - Next Generation Weapon System |url=https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/europe/nextgenws.htm |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221121135756/https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/europe/nextgenws.htm |archive-date=21 November 2022 |website=Global security}} The NGWS's components will be remote carrier vehicles (swarming drones) as well as a New Generation Fighter (NGF)—a planned sixth-generation jet fighter{{Cite web |last=Roblin |first=Sebastien |date=5 February 2019 |title=Forget the F-22 or Su-57: Europe Wants a Deadly 6th Generation Stealth Fighter |url=https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/forget-f-22-or-su-57-europe-wants-deadly-6th-generation-stealth-fighter-43327 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230128040952/https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/forget-f-22-or-su-57-europe-wants-deadly-6th-generation-stealth-fighter-43327 |archive-date=28 January 2023 |access-date=16 February 2019 |website=The National Interest}}{{Better source needed|date=October 2024}}—that will possibly supersede France's Rafale and Germany and Spain's Typhoons.{{Cite web |last=Trevithick |first=Joseph |date=4 December 2018 |title=Eurofighter Consortium 2.0 Takes Shape As Spain Set To Join Franco-German Stealth Jet Program |url=http://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/25279/eurofighter-consortium-2-0-takes-shape-as-spain-set-to-join-franco-german-stealth-jet-program |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230603073632/https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/25279/eurofighter-consortium-2-0-takes-shape-as-spain-set-to-join-franco-german-stealth-jet-program |archive-date=3 June 2023 |access-date=16 February 2019 |website=The Drive}}

History
The FCAS concept was developed in the frame of the European Technology Acquisition Programme (ETAP) that was started in 2001 as a co-operation between Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Sweden and Spain. The new FCAS concept was a System of Systems (SoS) approach combining manned and unmanned systems, combat aircraft and UCAV, to be more efficient in the envisaged future scenarios than operating with manned systems alone.
In 2017 Germany and Spain asked Airbus to start working on a proposal for a new fighter under the name Future Combat Air System (FCAS).{{Cite web |date=7 July 2017 |title=Is The Proposed Airbus Fighter Jet A Non-starter? |url=https://www.defensemirror.com/news/19796/Is_The_Proposed_Airbus_Fighter_Jet_A_Non_starter_ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240108024949/https://www.defensemirror.com/news/19796/Is_The_Proposed_Airbus_Fighter_Jet_A_Non_starter_ |archive-date=8 January 2024 |access-date= |website=Defense Mirror}}{{Cite web |last=Rettman |first=Andrew |date=12 June 2017 |title=EU states eye production of new fighter jet |url=https://euobserver.com/economic/138193 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231004133349/https://euobserver.com/green-economy/138193 |archive-date=4 October 2023 |access-date=17 March 2021 |website=EUobserver |language=en}}
