Futurians are a New Zealand sci-fi punk band formed in Dunedin in 2001.{{cite news|last=Valentine|first=Sam|title=Lines of Flight ready to take off|url=http://www.odt.co.nz/entertainment/music/249469/lines-flight-ready-take|accessdate=3 July 2013|newspaper=Otago Daily Times |date=16 March 2013}} Foxy Digitalis magazine called them the "best punk band on the fucken planet."{{cite web|last=Rose|first=Brad|title=Late Round Gems #2|url=http://www.foxydigitalis.com/foxyd/blog/2006/12/late-round-gems-2.php|work=Foxy Digitalis|accessdate=15 July 2013}}

Style

They have a distinctive retro-futuristic visual style. Their Power / Reactor single was released inside a 16-page full colour book of artworks and collages by the band, with a DVD compiling music videos from 2003 to 2013.{{cite web|title=Currently Available|url=http://www.pseudoarcana.com/current.htm|work=PseudoArcana|accessdate=3 July 2013}}

Their music has been described as drawing influence from digital rock, funk, minimalism, no wave, new wave, Brian Wilson, krautrock, noise music, disco, lo-fi, art rock, punk rock, dirges, riot grrrl, doom rock, and drone rock. Both musically and lyrically, the band's songs contain retro-futuristic sci-fi-related themes. They have been called "torn-down semi-punk skiffle", "the sound of gay robots disco dancing and crushing everything underfoot", taser-war stomp, overamped, "moto-beat wiggy-fuzz-workout", "as raw as a skinned knee", sounding "like a banshee funeral for Brian Wilson's cyborg clone", "armed with nuclear weapons of sonic dust", pure mayhem, "the remnants of space debris raining down on the green hills of New Zealand", a "lo-fi art rock nightmare", "space-tinged garage sludge" and "bent punk wizardry".{{cite news|last=Valentine|first=Sam|title=Sound shell hooks a whole school|url=http://www.odt.co.nz/entertainment/music/247669/sound-shell-hooks-whole-school|accessdate=3 July 2013|newspaper=Otago Daily Times |date=2 March 2013}}{{cite journal|last=Mosurak|first=Doug|title=Still Single|journal=Dusted|volume=3|issue=11|url=http://www.dustedmagazine.com/features/668|accessdate=15 July 2013}}{{cite news|last=Feltham|first=Henry|title=They are a pop band|url=http://www.critic.co.nz/culture/article/847/they-are-a-pop-band|accessdate=15 July 2013|newspaper=Critic|date=11 April 2011}}{{cite web|last=Rose |first=Brad |title=The Futurians "Faktory!" |url=http://www.digitalisindustries.com/foxyd/reviews.php?which=151 |work=Foxy Digitalis |accessdate=15 July 2013 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130623210927/http://www.digitalisindustries.com/foxyd/reviews.php?which=151 |archivedate=23 June 2013 }}{{cite web|last=Middleton|first=Matt|title=why the futurians rule the world|url=http://crude2008.blogspot.co.nz/2008/07/why-futurians-rule-world.html|accessdate=15 July 2013|archive-date=19 June 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150619163110/http://crude2008.blogspot.co.nz/2008/07/why-futurians-rule-world.html|url-status=dead}}{{cite web|last=Rose |first=Brad |title=The Futurians "Pimp My Tardis" |url=http://www.digitalisindustries.com/foxyd/reviews.php?which=829 |work=Foxy Digitalis |accessdate=15 July 2013 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130623202512/http://www.digitalisindustries.com/foxyd/reviews.php?which=829 |archivedate=23 June 2013 }}{{cite web|last=Rose|first=Brad|title=cja & the silverbullets "overgrow"|url=http://www.foxydigitalis.com/foxyd/blog/2008/04/new-digitalis-ltd-tapes-cdr.php|work=Foxy Digitalis|accessdate=15 July 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150924015020/http://www.foxydigitalis.com/foxyd/blog/2008/04/new-digitalis-ltd-tapes-cdr.php|archive-date=24 September 2015|url-status=dead}}{{cite web|last=Clover|first=Stephen|title=Four quickies for Root Don Lonie For Cash|url=http://www.foxydigitalis.com/foxyd/blog/2006/12/four-quickies-for-root-don-lonie-for.php|work=Foxy Digitalis|accessdate=15 July 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150924015020/http://www.foxydigitalis.com/foxyd/blog/2006/12/four-quickies-for-root-don-lonie-for.php|archive-date=24 September 2015|url-status=dead}}{{cite journal |author1=Byron Coley |authorlink1=Byron Coley |title=Size Matters |journal=The Wire |date=March 2019 |issue=421 |page=68}}

Their music is often recorded in low fidelity. One reviewer said, "the only way you'd achieve less fidelity is if you converted to punch-card and faxed to yourself."

Formation and membership

Ducklingmonster (Beth Dawson) and CJA the Pirate (Clayton Noone) were playing in Dunedin as BC. In 2001, drummer Pat Kraus joined and named them the Futurians.{{cite web|title=BC TRAMWAY TO THE RISE|url=http://thefuturians.bandcamp.com/album/bc-tramway-to-the-rise|accessdate=3 July 2013}}{{cite web|last=Kraus|title=About Kraus|url=http://www.kraus.co.nz/about.html|accessdate=14 July 2013}} He left after recording their first album, and ISO-12 (Jason Aldridge) and Rocko Mandroid (Sean Norling) were recruited soon afterwards on synth and drums respectively. Stefan Neville of Pumice was later an interim member, and Antony Milton played a space-y game onstage once.{{cite web|title=the futurians|url=http://thebigcity.co.nz/artists/f/futurians-the|work=the big city|date=3 February 2011 |accessdate=15 July 2013}}
