Function

This gene encodes a subunit of glutamate receptor ligand-gated ion channel. Most of these channels mediate fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. GluD1 is expressed in the central nervous system{{cite journal | vauthors = Nakamoto C, Konno K, Miyazaki T, Nakatsukasa E, Natsume R, Abe M, Kawamura M, Fukazawa Y, Shigemoto R, Yamasaki M, Sakimura K, Watanabe M | display-authors = 6 | title = Expression mapping, quantification, and complex formation of GluD1 and GluD2 glutamate receptors in adult mouse brain | journal = The Journal of Comparative Neurology | volume = 528 | issue = 6 | pages = 1003–1027 | date = April 2020 | pmid = 31625608 | doi = 10.1002/cne.24792 | s2cid = 203937925 | doi-access = free }} and is important in synaptic plasticity.{{cite journal | vauthors = Yuzaki M, Aricescu AR | title = A GluD Coming-Of-Age Story | journal = Trends in Neurosciences | volume = 40 | issue = 3 | pages = 138–150 | date = March 2017 | pmid = 28110935 | pmc = 5553105 | doi = 10.1016/j.tins.2016.12.004 }}

Clinical significance

Several genetic epidemiology studies have shown a strong association between several variants of the GRID1 gene and increased risk of developing schizophrenia.{{cite journal | vauthors = Guo SZ, Huang K, Shi YY, Tang W, Zhou J, Feng GY, Zhu SM, Liu HJ, Chen Y, Sun XD, He L | display-authors = 6 | title = A case-control association study between the GRID1 gene and schizophrenia in the Chinese Northern Han population | journal = Schizophrenia Research | volume = 93 | issue = 1–3 | pages = 385–90 | date = July 2007 | pmid = 17490860 | doi = 10.1016/j.schres.2007.03.007 | s2cid = 9497500 }}{{cite journal | vauthors = Treutlein J, Mühleisen TW, Frank J, Mattheisen M, Herms S, Ludwig KU, Treutlein T, Schmael C, Strohmaier J, Bösshenz KV, Breuer R, Paul T, Witt SH, Schulze TG, Schlösser RG, Nenadic I, Sauer H, Becker T, Maier W, Cichon S, Nöthen MM, Rietschel M | display-authors = 6 | title = Dissection of phenotype reveals possible association between schizophrenia and Glutamate Receptor Delta 1 (GRID1) gene promoter | journal = Schizophrenia Research | volume = 111 | issue = 1–3 | pages = 123–30 | date = June 2009 | pmid = 19346103 | doi = 10.1016/j.schres.2009.03.011 | s2cid = 20949145 }}
