GUMPS is an acronym widely used by retractable gear aircraft pilots as a mental checklist to ensure nothing critical has been forgotten before landing. Its popularity is widespread, appearing in flight student curricula, FAA publications and aviation magazines.{{cite web|url = https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2000/february/flight-training-magazine/mnemonic-reminders|title=Mnemonic Reminders|accessdate = 27 July 2017|date=Feb 2000}}{{cite web|url = http://dms.ntsb.gov/pubdms/search/dockList.cfm?mKey=54201|title = NYC02LA061|accessdate = 17 March 2010|last = National Transportation Safety Board|author-link = National Transportation Safety Board|authorlink = |date=February 2002}}{{cite web|url=http://www.kingschools.com/vote/voteResults.asp?q=34 |title=KwikVote Results |accessdate=17 March 2010 |last=King Schools |year=2010 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20071023103346/https://www.kingschools.com/vote/voteResults.asp?q=34 |archivedate=October 23, 2007 }}
Due to distraction and preoccupation during the landing sequence approximately 100 gear-up landing incidents occurred each year in the United States between 1998 and 2003.{{cite web|url = http://asrs.arc.nasa.gov/publications/callback/cb_292.htm |title = Checklist Checkup|accessdate = 2010-02-26|last = NASA|author-link = |date=January 2004 }}
