Filippelli is the author of two books and many journal articles. He is the recipient of several awards and served as senior science advisor for the United States State Department from 2013–2014. His research addresses biogeochemical cycling in the environment, and the links between environmental processes and human health.
Education
Filippelli was awarded a BS in geology from the University of California, Davis in 1986, a PhD in 1994 from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and then began working as an assistant professor of geology in 1994.{{Cite web |date=2002 |title=Gabriel Filippelli |url=https://sites.nationalacademies.org/pga/Jefferson/PGA_084322 |access-date=December 11, 2022 |website=National Academies: Jefferson Science Fellowship Program}}
