Gadolinium acetate is the acetate salt of the lanthanide element gadolinium with the chemical formula Gd(CH3COO)3. It is a colorless crystal that is soluble in water and can form a hydrate.{{Cite book |date=1971 |publisher=Химия |editor-last=Никольский |editor-first=Б.П. |edition=3-е изд., испр |volume=2 |location=Л. |script-title=ru: Справочник химика |lang=ru}} Its tetrahydrate has ground state ferromagnetism.

Preparation

The tetrahydrate of gadolinium acetate can be crystallized from aqueous solution by reaction of gadolinium oxide and acetic acid:{{Cite journal |last=Hatscher |first=Stephan T. |last2=Urland |first2=Werner |date=2003 |title=Unexpected Appearance of Molecular Ferromagnetism in the Ordinary Acetate [Gd(OAc)3(H2O)22]⋅4 H2O |url=https://www.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/anie.200250738 |journal=Angewandte Chemie International Edition |volume=42 |issue=25 |pages=2862–2864 |doi=10.1002/anie.200250738 |issn=1521-3773 |pmid=12833342 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200527020954/https://www.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/anie.200250738 |archive-date=2020-05-27 |accessdate=2019-02-01|url-access=subscription }}

Properties

The complex [Gd4(CH3COO)4(acac)8(H2O)4] can be obtained by the reflux reaction of gadolinium acetate and acetylacetone in the presence of triethylamine in methanol solution.{{Cite journal |last=Guo |first=Fu-Sheng |last2=Leng |first2=Ji-Dong |last3=Liu |first3=Jun-Liang |last4=Meng |first4=Zhao-Sha |last5=Tong |first5=Ming-Liang |date=2012-01-02 |title=Polynuclear and Polymeric Gadolinium Acetate Derivatives with Large Magnetocaloric Effect |url=https://doi.org/10.1021/ic2018314 |journal=Inorganic Chemistry |volume=51 |issue=1 |pages=405–413 |doi=10.1021/ic2018314 |issn=0020-1669 |pmid=22145780 |accessdate=2019-02-01|url-access=subscription }}
