The genus is named after the English naturalist Sir Thomas Gage (1781–1820). They were originally described as species of Ornithogalum, which, together with the usual yellow colour of the flowers, explains the English name yellow star-of-Bethlehem for the common European species, Gagea lutea.{{Cite book |year=1980 |editor-last=Tutin |editor-first=T.G. |editor2-last=Heywood |editor2-first=V.H. |editor3-last=Burges |editor3-first=N.A. |editor4-last=Moore |editor4-first=D.M. |editor5-last=Valentine |editor5-first=D.H. |editor6-last=Walters |editor6-first=S.M. |editor7-last=Webb |editor7-first=D.A. |title=Flora Europaea |volume=5 |publisher=Cambridge University Press |isbn=978-0-521-20108-7 |name-list-style=amp }} p. 25.{{Cite web |title=Lloydia |work=World Checklist of Selected Plant Families |publisher=Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew |url=http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/namedetail.do?name_id=280365 |access-date=2014-01-09 |archive-date=2020-07-26 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200726160147/https://wcsp.science.kew.org/namedetail.do?name_id=280365 |url-status=dead }}
