Palaeoecology

Fossil remains from Coste San Giacomo, dating to about 2.1 Ma, show G. meneghinii to have been a mixed feeder.{{Cite journal |last=Strani |first=Flavia |date=3 October 2021 |title=Impact of Early and Middle Pleistocene major climatic events on the palaeoecology of Southern European ungulates |url=https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08912963.2020.1782898 |journal=Historical Biology |language=en |volume=33 |issue=10 |pages=2260–2275 |doi=10.1080/08912963.2020.1782898 |bibcode=2021HBio...33.2260S |issn=0891-2963 |access-date=7 September 2024 |via=Taylor and Francis Online|url-access=subscription }}{{Cite journal |last=Strani |first=Flavia |last2=DeMiguel |first2=Daniel |last3=Sardella |first3=Raffaele |last4=Bellucci |first4=Luca |date=1 August 2015 |title=Paleoenvironments and climatic changes in the Italian Peninsula during the Early Pleistocene: evidence from dental wear patterns of the ungulate community of Coste San Giacomo |url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0277379115002073 |journal=Quaternary Science Reviews |language=en |volume=121 |pages=28–35 |doi=10.1016/j.quascirev.2015.05.008 |access-date=15 November 2024 |via=Elsevier Science Direct|url-access=subscription }} However, remains from the site of Olivola dating to around the time of the Gelasian-Calabrian transition instead suggest that G. meneghinii was a grazer, as evidenced by its dental wear showing signs of heavy consumption of grass, grit, and dust. It had a preference for mountainous habitats.{{Cite journal |last1=Strani |first1=Flavia |last2=DeMiguel |first2=Daniel |last3=Bellucci |first3=Luca |last4=Sardella |first4=Raffaele |date=15 June 2018 |title=Dietary response of early Pleistocene ungulate communities to the climate oscillations of the Gelasian/Calabrian transition in Central Italy |url=https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0031018218300634 |journal=Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology |language=en |volume=499 |pages=102–111 |doi=10.1016/j.palaeo.2018.03.021 |bibcode=2018PPP...499..102S |access-date=7 September 2024 |via=Elsevier Science Direct}}
