The name derives from the Scottish Gaelic Gart an Easa, which means "enclosed field by the stream".{{Cite book|last=Council|first=Lanarkshire (Scotland) County|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Qo8EnoeIatkC&dq=Gartness&pg=PA2072|title=Minutes of the County Council and Reports and Minutes of Committees of the Council and Other Documents Submitted to the Council|date=1948|publisher=The Council|language=en}}
Facilities
Whilst the hamlet has no facilities, there is an honesty shop serving walkers on the famous West Highland Way, and Drymen Camping, a campsite along the road towards Drymen, also directly on the trail.
