Gato is a deep neural network for a range of complex tasks that exhibits multimodality. It can perform tasks such as engaging in a dialogue, playing video games, controlling a robot arm to stack blocks, and more. It was created by researchers at London-based AI firm DeepMind. It is a transformer, like GPT-3.{{citation |last=Ray |first=Tiernan |publisher=ZDNet|title=DeepMind's 'Gato' is mediocre, so why did they build it? |date= May 14, 2022 |url=https://www.zdnet.com/article/deepminds-gato-is-mediocre-so-why-did-they-build-it/}} According to MIT Technology Review, the system "learns multiple different tasks at the same time, which means it can switch between them without having to forget one skill before learning another" whereas "[t]he AI systems of today are called “narrow,” meaning they can only do a specific, restricted set of tasks such as generate text",{{citation |last=Heikkilä |first=Melissa |work=MIT Technology Review|title=The hype around DeepMind's new AI model misses what's actually cool about it |date=May 23, 2022|url=https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/05/23/1052627/deepmind-gato-ai-model-hype/}} and according to The Independent, it is a "'generalist agent' that can carry out a huge range of complex tasks, from stacking blocks to writing poetry".{{cite news |last=Cuthbertson |first=Anthony |title='The Game is Over': Google's DeepMind says it is on verge of achieving human-level AI |newspaper=The Independent|date=23 May 2022|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/ai-deepmind-artificial-general-intelligence-b2080740.html}} It uses supervised learning with 1.2B parameters.{{cite arXiv | last1=Reed| first1=Scott| last2=Zolna| first2=Konrad| last3=Parisotto| first3=Emilio| author4=Sergio Gomez Colmenarejo| last5=Novikov| first5=Alexander|last6=Barth-Maron| first6=Gabriel| last7=Gimenez| first7=Mai| last8=Sulsky| first8=Yury| last9=Kay| first9=Jackie| author10=Jost Tobias Springenberg| last11=Eccles| first11=Tom| last12=Bruce| first12=Jake| last13=Razavi| first13=Ali| last14=Edwards| first14=Ashley| last15=Heess| first15=Nicolas| last16=Chen| first16=Yutian| author16-link=Chen Yutian| last17=Hadsell| first17=Raia| last18=Vinyals| first18=Oriol| last19=Bordbar| first19=Mahyar| author20-first=Nando|author20-last=de Freitas|author20-link=Nando de Freitas| title=A Generalist Agent| date=12 May 2022 |class=cs.AI |eprint=2205.06175}} The technology has been described as "general purpose" artificial intelligence and a "step toward" artificial general intelligence.{{citation |last=Wiggers |first=Kyle |title=DeepMind's new AI can perform over 600 tasks, from playing games to controlling robots |date=May 13, 2022|work=TechCrunch|url=https://techcrunch.com/2022/05/13/deepminds-new-ai-can-perform-over-600-tasks-from-playing-games-to-controlling-robots/}}
