History

Gawler and District College was created in 2013 through combining the Gawler High School, Evanston Primary School and Evanston Preschool into one site, the site formerly occupied by the high school.

Gawler High School was a secondary public school located in Evanston, South Australia. The school was founded in 1907 as the Gawler School of Mines. It moved to a site on Lyndoch Road in Gawler East in 1915, and moved to the Evanston site in the 1960s.{{cite web |url=http://www.gawlerhs.sa.edu.au/history/history.htm |title=History |work=Gawler High School |accessdate=28 July 2016}} (with the motto, Vade ad Formicam), making it the oldest school in the area. The last principal of Gawler High School was Mr. Greg Harvey{{cite web|url=http://www.gawlerhs.sa.edu.au/downloads/2009%20annual%20report.pdf|title=Gawler High School 2009 Annual Report|accessdate=25 August 2010|year=2009|work=Gawler High School|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110218075600/http://www.gawlerhs.sa.edu.au/downloads/2009%20annual%20report.pdf|archivedate=18 February 2011}} who succeeded Sandra Lowery, who left the school at the end of the 2007 school year, ending her 15 years as headmistress. {{Citation needed|date=February 2008}} Gawler High School had some 800 pupils as of 2009, ranging from educational year groups eight to twelve.

Evanston Primary School was founded in the 1950s as the suburb of Evanston was growing. It was located facing Para Road behind the Gawler High School.{{Cite web |title=Gawler and District College |url=https://www.internationalstudents.sa.edu.au/en/school/gawler-and-district-college/ |access-date=2023-08-04 |website=South Australian Government Schools |language=en-AU}}{{Citation |last=Centre |first=Gawler & District College B.-12 Children's |title=Gawler & District College B-12 Children's Centre |date=2022-01-31 |url=https://www.preschools.sa.gov.au/gawler-dist-college-b-12-chn-ctr |access-date=2023-08-04 |publisher=Gawler & District College B-12 Children's Centre |language=en}}
