The GeeksPhone Peak is a low-end smartphone released by GeeksPhone in April 2013. It is intended for software developers wanting to build and test mobile applications on the new Firefox OS, not for general consumers.{{cite web | title = Geeksphone Keon – Smartphones – CNET Reviews |url = http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/geeksphone-keon/4505-6452_7-35619072.html |date = 11 May 2013 |accessdate = 1 June 2013}}

The Peak and the entry-level Keon are the first commercially available mobile devices running Firefox OS.

History and availability

GeeksPhone Keon and Peak initially became available on 23 April 2013 and the first batch sold out in a few hours.{{cite web |title = Geeksphone Sold Out in a Few Hours, That's A Good First Step for Firefox OS – Forbes |url = https://www.forbes.com/sites/ewanspence/2013/04/23/geeksphone-sold-out-in-a-few-hours-thats-a-good-first-step-for-firefox-os/ |first = Ewan |last = Spence |work = Forbes |date = 23 April 2013 |accessdate = 4 June 2013}}

Open-source

Unlike the lower-end GeeksPhone Keon, the Peak is not fully open source{{cite web |title = [How to] [UNNOFICIAL] build and replace gecko and gaia (with mozilla's) |url = http://forum.geeksphone.com/index.php?topic=4436.msg56629#msg56629 |first = Carlos |last = Martínez Lozano |date = 8 April 2013 |accessdate = 4 June 2013 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140108222300/http://forum.geeksphone.com/index.php?topic=4436.msg56629#msg56629 |archive-date = 8 January 2014 |url-status = dead }} as it contains and requires some proprietary Qualcomm code.

GeeksPhone Peak+

The GeeksPhone Peak+, an improved version of the original Peak, was first announced on 16 July 2013.{{Cite web |title = GeeksPhone Peak+ To Be The World's First High-End Firefox Smartphone? | GadgeTell |url = http://www.technologytell.com/gadgets/125188/geeksphone-peak-to-be-the-worlds-first-high-end-firefox-smartphone/ |first = Adrian |last = Diaconescu |publisher = TechnologyTell |date = 16 July 2013 |accessdate = 13 September 2013 |archive-date = 14 April 2016 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20160414223450/http://www.technologytell.com/gadgets/125188/geeksphone-peak-to-be-the-worlds-first-high-end-firefox-smartphone/ |url-status = dead }} Unlike the original Peak, Peak+ is a customer-oriented device,{{Cite web |title = Geeksphone Announces Its First Consumer-Focused Firefox Smartphone, Mid-Range Peak+ Preorders Kick Off At $196 |url = https://techcrunch.com/2013/07/25/peak-plus/ |first = Natasha |last = Lomas |date = 25 July 2013 |accessdate = 13 September 2013}} which features twice the RAM of the original Peak and an added compass sensor.{{Cite web |title=Peak+ (Pre-order) – Geeksphone |url=http://shop.geeksphone.com/en/phones/8-peak.html |publisher=GeeksPhone |accessdate=13 September 2013 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130917125426/http://shop.geeksphone.com/en/phones/8-peak.html |archivedate=17 September 2013 }} The Peak+ also features the same exterior dimensions as the peak.

GeeksPhone estimated that the shipping of the Peak+ devices would start in November 2013, but had some issues with material providers not meeting schedules.{{Cite web |title = Peak+ vs Peak details & shipping troubles |url = http://forum.geeksphone.com/index.php?topic=5630.msg60750 |first = Luis |last = Cuervo |date = 9 September 2013 |accessdate = 13 September 2013 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140203031058/http://forum.geeksphone.com/index.php?topic=5630.msg60750 |archive-date = 3 February 2014 |url-status = dead }}

Mozilla does not allow the GeeksPhone Peak+ to be called a "Firefox OS device" and insists that it should be described as a "device based on Boot to Gecko technology".{{Cite web |title = Mozilla, The Late-To-The-Mobile-Party Lumbering Dinosaur of Open, Is Playing Carriers' Pet To Make Firefox OS Fly | TechCrunch |url = https://techcrunch.com/2013/07/28/mozillas-faustian-pact/ |first = Natasha |last = Lomas |date = 28 July 2013 |accessdate = 13 September 2013}} It has been said that Mozilla is yet to make up its mind regarding what "Firefox OS certification" entails and that it favors its carrier supports over start-ups, such as GeeksPhone. GeeksPhone assures that despite Mozilla not wanting to support the Peak/Peak+ display resolution, the internals of Peak+ will be exactly the same as those of the original Peak, only without the Mozilla logos. The Peak + is now running a certified copy of Firefox OS 1.1.{{Cite web |title = Geeksphone now selling Firefox OS to consumers with Peak+ |url = http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57595420-94/geeksphone-now-selling-firefox-os-to-consumers-with-peak/ |publisher = cNet |accessdate = 8 November 2013}}{{Cite web |title = Peak+ is not Firefox OS device! |url = http://forum.geeksphone.com/index.php?topic=5528.0 |first = Luis |last = Cuervo |date = 29 July 2013 |accessdate = 13 September 2013 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20131017003004/http://forum.geeksphone.com/index.php?topic=5528.0 |archive-date = 17 October 2013 |url-status = dead }}
