Current activities

The GFNC holds monthly face-to-face and online meetings from February to December. In these meetings, the club invites a guest speaker to present on a topic related to natural history or conservation.{{Cite web |title=GFNC - Bellarine and Geelong ENVIRONMENTAL VOLUNTEERING CALENDAR- Community Events Portal |url=https://bgevc.com/organiser/geelong-field-nats/ |access-date=2024-04-17 |language=en-AU}} Field trips are held at least once a month and are regularly hosted by experts in the local area. This is exemplified by the club's 2020 submission to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 Review, in which they request mechanisms are put in place to better use citizen scientific knowledge and reach out to community organisations when investigating changes to biodiverse regions.{{Cite web |last=Geelong Field Naturalists Club |title=Geelong Field Naturalists Club Submission in response to discussion paper |url=https://epbcactreview.environment.gov.au/submissions/anon-qjcp-ugkz-f |access-date=2024-04-17 |website=Independent Review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999}}

History

The Geelong region has a long history of conservation work, with a naturalist club, also named the Geelong Field Naturalists Club, meeting in the area from 1880 till their conclusion of activities in 1932.{{Cite web |title=The Geelong naturalist - Catalogue {{!}} National Library of Australia |url=https://nla.gov.au/nla.cat-vn2212250 |access-date=2024-03-13 |website=nla.gov.au |language=en}} This club was the second field naturalist club founded in Victoria.{{Cite journal |last=Presland |first=Gary |date=2010 |title=The role of naturalists in environmental conservation |url=https://www.publish.csiro.au/rs/pdf/RS10025 |journal=Transactions of the Royal Society of Victoria |volume=122 |issue=2 |pages=xci-xcv |via=CSIRO Publishing}}

In this time, the club produced two serial publications, The Geelong Naturalist: The Journal of the Geelong Field Naturalists' Club (1891{{ndash}}1931)https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/103411 and The Wombat: Journal of the Geelong Field Naturalists' Club (1895{{ndash}}1902).https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/59810 The club was also responsible for the first Nature Study Exhibition of the Gordon Technical College in 1884, awarding school students with scholarships to undertake education in horticulture.{{Cite news |date=1905-10-20 |title=NATURE STUDY. |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article199424519 |access-date=2024-04-10 |work=Age}}{{Cite book |last1=Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria. |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/37551 |title=The Victorian Naturalist |last2=Victoria |first2=Field Naturalists' Club of |last3=Barnard |first3=F. The modern Geelong Field Naturalists Club was founded in 1961 by Australian naturalist Trevor Pescott and several other Geelong locals. Prescott served as president for three years and edited the Geelong Naturalist. He still leads the club's Fauna Group, which regularly undertakes animal surveys of the region.{{Cite web |title=Fauna Group |url=https://www.gfnc.org.au/groups/fauna-group |access-date=2024-03-13 |website=www.gfnc.org.au}}

The GFNC and president at the time, Jack Wheeler, were instrumental in the early 1960s in establishing the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve.{{cite journal |author1=Hart, Brian |author2=McCarthy, Gordon |author3=Lingham, Barry |author4=Mackenzie, Rob |author5=Hewish, Marilyn. |year= 2005 |title= The birds of Ocean Grove Nature Reserve |journal= Geelong Bird Report 2004 |pages= 71–101 |issn=1323-2681}}

Publications

The first issue of The Geelong Naturalist was published in July 1891, and began with the following introduction:

We send out this, the first issue of our quarterly journal, in the hope that it may be the means of bringing the objects of our Association under the notice of our readers, and inducing them — especially the young — to devote some of their leisure to the study of one of the branches of Science. The pleasure derived will more than repay any trouble caused...”{{Cite journal |date=July 1891 |title=Ourselves |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/62058319 |journal=The Geelong Naturalist |volume=1 |issue=1 |pages=1 |via=Biodiversity Heritage Library}}
