History
Gender Rights Maryland was founded in May 2011 with an original goal of passing a comprehensive gender identity anti‐discrimination bill in Maryland by the end of the 2012 legislative session. Its founding board members included Sharon Brackett, Dana Beyer M.D., Donna Cartwright, Caroline Temmermand, and Alex Hickcox.{{cite press release | url=http://www.genderrightsmaryland.org/joomla/index.php/news/press-releases/76-gender-rights-maryland-commends-governor-omalleys-statement-supporting-gender-identity-antidiscrimination-legislation | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150924021355/http://www.genderrightsmaryland.org/joomla/index.php/news/press-releases/76-gender-rights-maryland-commends-governor-omalleys-statement-supporting-gender-identity-antidiscrimination-legislation | url-status=usurped | archive-date=September 24, 2015 | title=Gender Rights Maryland commends Governor O'Malley's statement supporting gender identity anti-discrimination legislation | publisher=Gender Rights Maryland | date=May 18, 2011 | accessdate=February 5, 2013}}
By the beginning of the 2013 session, the organization which provided the effort to pass comprehensive gender identity anti-discrimination legislation in Maryland via Senate Bill 449, called the Fairness for All Marylanders Act of 2013, was the Maryland Coalition for Trans Equality.{{cite news | url=http://www.washingtonblade.com/2013/01/09/md-va-to-tackle-bias-trans-rights-as-lawmakers-return/ | title=Md., Va. to tackle bias, trans rights as lawmakers return | work=Washington Blade | date=January 9, 2013 | accessdate=February 5, 2013 | author=Lavers, Michael}}{{cite news | url=http://www.lgbtqnation.com/2013/01/maryland-lawmakers-introduce-transgender-rights-bill/ | title=Maryland lawmakers introduce transgender rights bill | work=LGBTQ Nation | date=January 29, 2013 | accessdate=February 5, 2013 | author=Lavers, Michael}} Gender Rights Maryland made a decision to leave the Maryland Coalition for Trans Equality in January 2012. The legislation, Senate Bill 212, introduced on their behalf in 2012, by Senator Jamie Raskin, died in committee without a vote.{{cite web | url=http://pamshouseblend.firedoglake.com/tag/sb-212/ | title=SB212 dies in committee | publisher=Pam's house Blend | accessdate=April 25, 2013}}
Additionally before the 2013 Maryland General Assembly legislative session, Gender Rights Maryland chose to continue an alliance with two of the six local PFLAG chapters in Maryland. In a press release dated November 20, 2012, GRMD executive director Dana Beyer is quoted "We welcome all allies, including those allies who worked for these causes in previous years, to join our alliance in moving these issues forward".{{cite web | url=http://www.genderrightsmaryland.org/joomla/index.php/news/grmd-blog/118-alliance-to-continue-moving-gender-identity-rights-forward-in-maryland | title=GRMD November 20, 2012 Press Release | publisher=Gender Rights Maryland | accessdate=April 25, 2013 | archive-date=April 20, 2013 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130420194754/http://genderrightsmaryland.org/joomla/index.php/news/grmd-blog/118-alliance-to-continue-moving-gender-identity-rights-forward-in-maryland | url-status=usurped }} Since the departure of GRMD, the Maryland Coalition for Trans Equality has built a coalition of over 40 organizations.{{cite web | url=http://mdtransequality.org/who-we-are | title=MCTE- Who we are | publisher=Maryland Coalition for Trans Equality | accessdate=April 25, 2013 | archive-date=March 13, 2014 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140313220652/http://mdtransequality.org/who-we-are | url-status=dead }}
