General Government chess tournament

{{Short description|Events in Nazi-occupied Poland (1942–44)}}

General Government chess championships (Schachmeisterschaft des Generalgouvernements) were Nazi tournaments held during World War II in occupied central Poland. Hans Frank, the Governor-General of General Government, was the patron of those tournaments because he was an avid chess player.[http://www.astercity.net/~vistula/fredvandervliet2.htm Chess In Former German, Now Polish Territories - Fred Van Der Vliet] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120108163521/http://www.astercity.net/~vistula/fredvandervliet2.htm |date=2012-01-08 }}[http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/extra/frank.html Hans Frank and Chess – Edward Winter]

The competition began when he organized a chess congress in Kraków on 3 November 1940. Six months later Frank announced the establishment of a chess school under Chess grandmasters, Yefim Bogolyubov and Alexander Alekhine.

Historical context

A number of Polish chess players were arrested in January 1940. Jewish players were killed by Germans, e.g. Dawid Przepiórka. Ethnic Poles didn't participate in the tournaments.{{cite journal|last=Goldstein|first=Alexander|title=David Przepiórka|journal=EG|year=1984|volume=77|issue=5|pages=314–317}}{{cite book|last=Hoffman|first=Paul|title=King's Gambit: A Son, a Father, and the World's Most Dangerous Game|url=https://archive.org/details/kingsgambitsonfa00hoff|url-access=registration|quote=David Przepiorka.|year=2007|publisher=Hyperion Books|page=[https://archive.org/details/kingsgambitsonfa00hoff/page/388 388]}}
