Plot and setting

The game takes place in an alternate 1989 Sweden where violent robots have taken over. The robots range in size from tiny scouting drones to massive robots that tower over the houses. The player assumes the role of a Swedish teenager who returns from an island excursion to find that the local populace has disappeared as a result of the robotic invasion. While striving to survive in the Swedish wilderness, the player must figure out a means to beat the machines and learn what happened to people who lived there.{{cite news|url=https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/03/28/generation-zero-review/|title=Wot I Think: Generation Zero|first=Emily|last=Richardson|date=28 March 2019|website=Rock Paper Shotgun|accessdate=16 April 2019}}{{cite web|url=https://wccftech.com/review/generation-zero-review/|title=Generation Zero Review - Country Roads, Take me Home|last=Wray|first=Chris|website=Wccftech|language=en-US|access-date=2019-04-29}}

The artistic style of the game has frequently been likened to the artwork of Simon Stålenhag,{{cite web|url=https://kotaku.com/new-swedish-robot-game-sure-looks-like-simon-stalenhags-1826652612|title=New Swedish Robot Game Sure Looks Like Simon Stålenhag's Art|first=Luke|last=Plunkett|website=Kotaku|date=7 June 2018 |accessdate=16 April 2019}} including by the artist himself.{{cite web|url=https://www.svt.se/kultur/simon-stalenhag-generation-zero-ar-forvirrande-likt-min-konst|title=Simon Stålenhag: Spelet är förvirrande likt min konst|date=21 August 2018|website=SVT Nyheter|accessdate=16 April 2019}} However, despite perceived similarities, Avalanche Studios has denied that the style of the game has been inspired or motivated by Stålenhag's art and that the artist was involved directly or indirectly in the making of the game.
