He is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota.[http://philosophy.umn.edu/people/ University of Minnesota department page] He obtained his B.A. (1965) and Ph.D. (1972) degrees in philosophy from Harvard University. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007.
